  1. DCC are such a mess. Nearly everything they touch seems to be a disaster.

Local government is obviously very weak in Ireland, so is the solution giving more power and direct funding to local authorities, and making them more “professional” / scrutinised? I know I wouldn’t exactly trust them with more money as they are now, but the fact they are so weak surely is a factor in their disorganisation. In many European countries, you pay a significant portion of your income in taxes directly to the municipality – should we move to something similar? Make people more engaged with local government as well obviously.

  2. > It was, [Mr Keogh of Paul Keogh Architects] said, “extremely hard to comprehend” why the contract was being terminated now, when the decision to extend the pedestrianised area was made in November 2020.

  3. Can we just sack DCC and outsource our city management to the Dutch or something?

They’re genuinely useless as a council right across the board, everything from the most basic city management through to being completely unable to deliver on a single large scale public project.

There was a good article in the Times recently breaking down just how dysfunctional they are at project management

  4. This is no great shock considering how badly they run other aspects of the city. I mean, you can’t even find anywhere to sit down generally in town.

  5. Far better to delay than potentially open up the DCC to be liable for serious damages when whoever objected sues and wins in the High Court. Article is pretty light on the details but I’m guessing that a business competitor to the winning tenderer objected to the expansion to this scheme and that DCC felt that it was probably less risky to delay and just retender the expanded scheme.

  6. The Irish civil service, the managers and even politicians just does not seem to have skill set for managing large capital projects. Maternity hospital, so many failed public transport projects, plaza, etc. Some of the blame can be announcing projects before they are ready and that usually is blamed on the politicians. Honestly there should be a push to hire people from the private sector with experience in this area, a training and consultation set central government for it. Politicians and county managers should be made do some of the training.
