Mayo people be like

  1. There’s a lot of naivety and non gaa fans on this sub that really don’t understand sport rivalries and in particularly the Galway/Mayo rivalry. Especially between South Mayo and the Tuam border.

It is cold blooded, heated and both teams and fans dislike one another an awful lot. Another big one on the club circuit is Corofin and the Mitchels.

To the extent that the Mitchels entry to the pitch was blocked off by local stewards at half time in a game.

And on the Mayo front i’ve seen players shouldering Galway bodies to the ground after they were reaching out to shake hands before matches. So it is a very cagey affair between both counties.

When Galway played Mayo a couple years back there fans put up signs along the way to Castlebar labeled “67+ years and no all ireland medals to show for it, how come Mayo?”

And in the 2017 final, an official Galway gaa twitter account took joy in the defeat afterwards.

So those two events alone rubbed most Mayo people the wrong way and any resemblance of good will that was had for Galway had gone out the window.

Don’t forget also the halftime tunnel brawl in Croke Park last year (that was instigated by Galway) too.

So it’s not a big stretch or surprise to see Kerry being supported in the final by a lot of Mayo fans. (a lesser of two evils in a sense for many)

If you were to switch codes, I’d highly doubt Man City fans would be rooting for Man United fans and vice versa.

This is no different when you think about it. It would be the exact same story with Cork/Kerry, Armagh/Tyrone and Meath/Dublin.

All sports codes have there rivalries and it is perfectly natural and normal to anticipate and Expect that most fans of these teams will not want there rival’s to win.
