Going to NYC in a few weeks and I’ve been looking up transport options. Found out that the NYC MTA (responsible party for running buses and the subway in the city) recently launched a contactless payment system called OMNY. It allows you to pay for fares using your phone, watch or card and supports weekly fare capping (saver tickets coming soon). The lads in NTA should get in touch with them, be great to have this system over here.

  1. We’re about to do a whole load of capital investment in our bus and rail infrastructure, we need the NTA to stay far away from the MTA.

I’d rather look to european countries which have implemented such systems, like Krakow or Brussels.

  2. The MTA took what, 75 years to deliver the 2nd Ave subway line, which is still only partially completed? I’d avoid them unless you want advice on how to turn more of your ops over to organised crime

  3. They’ve essentially skipped a generation in technology, so are still behind us as the rollout of OMNY is nowhere near complete.

What they’ve been using until now is MetroCard, which are magstripe cards which were introduced in the mid-’90s.
