According this article, Fonds Kirchberg estimate that the working population of Kirchberg will explode from 12,000 to 66,700 by 2040. That’s a huge increase, and one that will necessitate a lot of new, tall buildings to accommodate.

Some of that will be local residents, which are forecast to swell to around 27,500 from 4,000 today, but that also means a lot more people trying to get on to the plateau in the morning, and leave it at night, probably something like 5x the number.

These numbers seem hugely ambitious/optimistic and I hope they’re planning some decent transport options in advance of any big increases. Given that the forecast 2025 figure is over 4x today’s working population (where are they going to go?!) and I don’t see any construction going on at the moment to account for them, I’m not feeling confident…

  1. I wanna see them try. As of now, only the land behind European school parking is without any issues.

Schettermarjaal and Kennedy Sud both lie in shambles due to environment studies concluding that there are ‘endangered’ species (some snake or bat) living there, so the construction plan can’t be started.

  2. 20 years is a lot of time (even more with the delays that are to be expected) but it’s not that farfetched that there might eventually be as many people on Kirchberg.

Quite honestly, I’m still sometimes surprised by how big Kirchberg got. There were mostly fields on my first tour of Kirchberg.

  3. This is what gets me every time, they want to have 1 million people in Luxembourg by I forgot which year, but the roads leading to the city are already massively overcrowded during peak hours. They built the tram which circulates INSIDE the city, but they completely disregard the fact that most workers come from outside. There should be some type of transport going back and forth between the borders and the city (I saw the idea of a monorail brought up once), that would’ve helped a lot more than the tram.

  4. The tram is to be extended to Esch by 2035 or something like that including a 100km/hr straight section. More frequent trains from neighbouring cities would seem feasible with the new platforms at the gare. But I do agree things will need to start building up and out asap if they want 1 million in the next 10 years. They need to keep an eye out from Dublins mistakes and make sure it not just build out, build up and build the transport and they will come!

I wouldn’t be surprised if they start to put city tariffs for cars with only a driver similar to London
