Euro zone inflation rate hits a record 4.9% for November

  1. I can’t help but wonder if articles like this are intentionally misleading with their choice of wording, in order to drive clicks and engagement.

Inflation was not 4.9% *for* November… That wording implies that prices rose by 4.9% in just November alone.

It’s more accurate (but less click-baity) to say “Annual inflation rose to 4.9% *in* November.”

Or, even more accurately, “As at November 30, the rolling annual rate of inflation was 4.9%.”

I talk to people who think prices are rising 5% per month because of how many articles are written like this. Panic generates headline clicks, and headline clicks generate ad revenue. Media is incentived to always have us panicking, enraged, confused, etc… Calm understanding of current events is bad for news media’s bottom line.

  2. Only 4.9% ? Because they DO NOT COUNT HOUSING PRICES IN INFLATION !

Here housing went this year up by average 19%. It’s much cheaper to borrow money then to save for anything…
