  1. So I’ve decided to revive a small CV project for a little bit in case it helps anyone (https://www.taifuwiddies.net/)

    It’s really in its infancy as a project, far from a clean,neat, hyper-responsive UI with an overly optimised backend ^I ^just ^wanted ^to ^finish ^something ^for ^once ^.

The idea is to compare Irish grocery websites (Aldi, Tesco, Supervalue) on their prices to find the cheapest groceries.
On top of that, I am tracking prices over time too, so hopefully I can eventually some cool enough graphs and findings.

There’s a technical explanation on my github too if you’re interested https://github.com/bilbobx182/shopping

  2. Really good idea! This sort of thing is badly needed right now with the price of everything. I would just say that for me, it doesn’t work great on mobile but obviously that’s something you can work on in time!

  3. This is great, but there should really be multiple columns for each store to compare side-by-side. If something is only a few cents dearer but located right next door, I’ll pay the convenience tax. Also, would love to “save” a result to later mass export my saved items to an excel sheet. This way I can also see how many of my items are cheaper in one store vs the other to make the most efficient shopping trip

  4. If there’s one thing Tesco/Dunnes/Supervalu abolutely love its web scrapers.

Scraping is unreliable and requires massive amounts of maintenance.

  5. Kind of fails to look at Dunnes and SuperValu. You probably need a way to differentiate between bran and own label and it would be more viewer friendly by listing the shops horizontally across. Cola is a very generic term and you could get everything from sweets to drinks to alcohol.

  6. If you are open to some comments and critiques, here are a few.

Some things that could add value

    * display date when price was taken
    * display any price changes relative from most recent to second most recent
    * group listings by product and seller. If I want to compare the price of 1 litre of milk between Aldi and Tesco, I currently have to scroll through a list of things to do so, this would ideally be grouped together for easy comparison
    * Showing minimum recorded price and maximum recorded price could be interesting to see how much value could be lost by not waiting for a sale

  7. If there was some way of entering your weekly shopping list and your site figures out where is the cheapest for each item which then gives you a shopping list for each store. Enter your list of local stores to make it even better.

Emails you each week with the list on the day you chose. In time, maybe add a feature to scan in a photo of your last week’s shopping receipt to automate it. Includes a total of how much you’ll save. Also a map of each shop showing you where to pick everything up.

Seems like it wouldn’t be massively overly complicated to create but I’m a poor idiot so don’t listen to me.

  8. You could also pull the image of the products to make it a little more visual.

An “add to shopping list” option would also be a nice extension that give you a list for each shop.
