Bus drivers face 40+ degrees cabin heat: “We are so undervalued. We’re treated worse than cattle”

  1. I’ve been calling buses mobile greenhouses this week. Large slow moving boxes made from metal and glass. Usually no aircon and some tiny windows that barely let any air in. Not been an enjoyable experience as a passenger just staying on one for a short time.

  2. Feel so bad for the drivers in Oxford the last couple of days, they’re a really good bunch of guys. Getting on for a couple of stops as a passenger was hellish, can’t imagine how it was driving one all day. If they went on strike tomorrow I’d be on the picket line with them

  3. Pull the buses off the road until the temperature drops back to 15°C.
I’m pretty sure they’d whine about that too.

  4. >We are so undervalued. We’re treated worse than Cattle

Like a vast majority of the workforce in Britain then

Who knows, if we all get hot and bothered enough finally change might happen

  5. I was on the bus for 40 minutes on Monday. It wasn’t until I got off that I realised quite how hot it was on there. It was meant to be 37°c outside and it felt noticeably cooler when I got off. I couldn’t imagine doing a whole shift in that

  6. Most busses don’t even have air con how’d they expect the drivers to work in that tiny box up front with just a fan

  7. Bus drivers have such a hard job, during Covid they were one of those groups at the forefront of the danger, but before that they have the stress of driving a colossal vehicle around crowded, polluted roads, difficult passengers during the day, and possibly dangerous ones at night, and it’s been many years since their one sense of security, a fellow worker in the form of a ticket collecter, was taken away. They definitely deserve better conditions and pay.

  8. Don’t you think it’s odd that we have to pay maintenance fees and existence rental charges just so we can be barely alive enough to go to work for most of our lives? Literally renting our own lives.

  9. The new ‘boris buses’ in london are generally too hot upstairs for half of the year. I can not imagine hot much hotter they were the least few days. Especially as the windows at the front dont even open.

Thing is, in the winter the busses are freezing cold. they have now heating, and no air con. Plus some morin always opens the front windows in december, so the rest of us have to sit in a freezing cold draft. We we cant just have sealed windows and proper heating, / air cont is beyond me.

I will admot though, some busses have a noise unit in thrm. It is located just above the stairs and makes a lot of noise. it doesnt seem to push any air around the cabin, nor cool or earm anything. just makes a lot of noise.

  10. Its actually because people who design busses never use them! If we forced those people who sign off bus designs to use only busses during summer and winter forever, you will be sure as hell they will be brought up to modern times. Ac and a heater that work!

  11. Unless they’re getting slaughtered at the end of their route, I still think I’d prefer to be a bus driver than a cow.

  12. My dad is a bus driver and he has been dying in this heat. Stupid long hours inside a small cabin with no AC. A man in his late 50s forced to wear shirt and trousers and jacket with only a small window for air.

Feel sorry for the man, the pay isn’t worth it and the breaks few and far between.
