Heatwave latest: UK temperature tops 40C for first time on record

  1. > ‘It’s a provisional record’

Oh okay, maybe not so bad…

    > ‘it says, and temperatures are still climbing.’

    Fuck me.

  2. Twitter comments already starting on it being Heathrow tarmac something something 1976 was hotter blah blah……

How much longer will they keep sticking their heads in the sand? 16C above average for a maritime climate is jaw dropping.

  3. We need to appreciate the staggering implications of a temperature record breaking the previous record by several degrees.

  4. Remember, Heathrow’s previous highest temperature on record was 37.9C set on 10/08/2003. It has been destroyed by more than 2.3C, and there’s still hours of heating to go. We are now in unexplored, uncharted territory: this is undeniably global warming in action.

  5. “Hur dur but it’s by heathrow airport so the tarmac makes it hotter” if that were the case every temperature record would be at Heathrow, but the previous was at Cambridge

  6. Is the humidity lower than usual? I’ve found the last couple of days haven’t felt as horrendous as expected

  7. One of the worrying things is this doesn’t feel like a once-in-a-generation type of event. We will surely see temps in the high 30s or even hitting 40 again repeatedly in the next 10-15 years.

  8. I nipped into town to get something for lunch today.
The main avenue into town is lined with trees. ALL OF THEM are shedding leaves like they do in autumn. I didnt stop to check on their condition – but it’s a reasonable assumption that heat damage is killing the leaves… not to mention a lack of water.
It might be time to plant Palm Trees… in **Middlesbrough**!

  9. I’m forever grateful to the older generations who fucked us over by doing nothing but ramp up the things causing climate change for more profit.

We should have been making changes in the 80s and 90s, that’s 30-40 years ago and we’ve done nothing since then but state targets & then miss them.

We’ve caused our own extinction event solely because of greed, it’s equally embarrassing & depressing.

e: There’s fruitloops claiming it’s heat from the engines from the planes, how the everloving fuck did we get to this point?

e2: apparently blaming the people responsible/in charge at the time we should have been making changes is wrong, I guess me, an infant at the time was just as responsible as those in charge of policies/laws.

e3: For the morons asking what I myself am doing about climate change, I don’t drive a car anymore, i’ve used a plane once in the last decade, I eat meat <5 times a month and am trying to reduce that by more & I don’t plan on having children which is a lot more than you will be doing if I had to hazard a guess, dickheads.

  10. I thought I would make myself angry and look at the comments section…I was actually pretty relieved! The vast majority acceptance that this is bad

  11. The extreme heat has made the Daily Mail use Celsius instead of Fahrenheit, the Met Office never warned us about this!

    Current DM headline
    >Hottest day in history: Britain hits a record 40.2C – first time ever in the forties – and is on track to soar to 43C today in unprecedented heat as roads MELT, schools shut and country grinds to a halt

  12. But I was assured last week that it was just one model and they always get the weather wrong and a 40c prediction was just a fantasy…

  13. Well done humanity.

Fucked up the only home we have and still too many wankers dont want to clean up.

A climate deniar in the final 5 of the tory leadership election for fucks sake.

  14. Has Patel blamed it on migration bringing their hot weather to rainswept Britain?
Johnson to stay on till he gets global warming done?

  15. Currently in one of the closest houses to the Northern runway at Heathrow. Can confirm that it is horrendous here.

  16. It’s infuriating because I’d like to see myself as a free speech absolutist, but in doing so you have to allow complete morons to be manipulated by fantasy stories

  17. I remember getting 42 degrees in Australia and I remember everyone saying to not go out in it there a country that gets it frequently..

I remember how alien it felt to see temps in the 40s and so thankful I’d never get that in England.

No idea how people can think this isn’t bizarre or cause for concern.

  18. I live in Hertfordshire, I got a thermometer that reads inside and outside temps.

Currently sitting at 44c outside and 37c inside.

  19. I think we forget that millions of other people have been living through this very situation for decades now.
The fact that little of this is in the control of regular people who will be most affected is fucking terrifying. We’re pretty much relying on the 0.01% who are in control of most of this mess to make some serious changes.
I don’t want to believe we are doomed. I want to be able to share this life with my future children and know I’m bringing them into a place that is at least hospitable!!!!!!

  20. My classroom was 41°c at 2pm today. I sent home zombie children at the end of the day today.
I have tried everything to keep them cool. I bought two fans. I froze bottled water for them to hold and sip, I bought spray bottles for them to cool off with. It’s not possible to teach in this heat, and if it’s just going to get worse I don’t know what to do.

  21. Are any of the candidates for Tory leadership even talking about this? Nope. This needs to be at the top of the agenda.

  22. But have you ever considered that it’s still 16C below the highest recorded temperature on Earth? You Brits are just overreacting smh Venus is much hotter than this and they’re coping just fine over there!

  23. And of course my elderly parents, in the Midlands in the UK where it is one of the hottest regions, were still talking about how climate change is cyclical and not man made, oooh, when we chatted on FaceTime two days ago.

They just can’t deal with the idea that it was their generation that screwed there world for everyone. And they’ll be dead before it gets too bad.

  24. Honestly just fucking vote green if you want amy kind of change. I have lost count of the amount of times i have heard people say they would vote green but its a wasted vote. If everyone that would have voted green actually did we might be able to tackle this climate crisis.

A vote for conservative accelerates our demise.

A vote for labour does not change anything, starmer may as well put on a blue ribbon.

I genuinely believe the only hope we have is for us all to vote green. I dont think they’re perfect but at least they give a fuck.
