Adding more capacity to De Ring will decrease traffic in the neighborhoods *temporarily* until induced demand has done its job and the extra capacity is filled up as well. Then people will start cutting through the neighborhoods again at which point all you’ve done is encourage more people to drive while spending a shit ton of money.
And then the next day the Flemish government claims that they **totally** want to reduce car traffic. While investing in increasing capacity for cars and reducing money for De Lijn. Give me a break.
Sorry but we’re broke. I don’t think we have the budget to try and get more cars into brussels. How ’bout we just tax the cars trying to reach brussels. It’ll cost the state less… and actually work.

Ik heb nooit begrepen wat het idee was van het knooppunt Groot-Bijgaarden. Heel de Ring moet daar over één rijstrook, ook alle vrachtwagens dus, die dan nog helemaal links terug aansluit op de hoofdweg, juist voor een helling? De enige keren dat ik geweten heb dat daar geen file is, is om 1u ‘s nachts.
Maar goed, ik ben geen verkeersexpert, misschien zit er een logica achter die ik niet zie.
Studies have shown adding more lanes doesn’t solve the problem of congested/high traffic, it merely sucks more people in.
Those people have studied for years and are experts in these kind of things, yet don’t know scientific evidence which everyone with half a brain can even look up.
Edit: it’s called induced demand. Once you add a lane it will be fine for a while, but eventually fill up again. This was first evidenced in the 1930’s in the US.
The Flemish gov really needs to go on a study trip to Houston.
