This is good actually. These organisations are complicit in human extinction. I can’t think of any higher crime, can you?
The law is not and never has been a guide to morality.
We are never going to be *allowed* to rise up against those who are doing this to us. If not now, when?
Great action!
XR block a road.
This sub: “Don’t inconvenience normal people, you should be targeting the powerful people who are responsible for this! This isn’t how you get people to change!”
XR target powerful people responsible for propagating at best questionable views on the climate crisis.
This sub: “This is criminal damage! You’ll never win round people like that! Criminals!”
Maybe if they had any journalistic integrity this wouldn’t happen.
Priti Patel is playing a dangerous game by outlawing peaceful protests with the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act.
If Extinction Rebellion become a proscribed organisation or face some kind of serious police crackdown, I fully expect their brand of civil disobedience to escalate into riots and eco-terrorism.
Smashing the windows of News UK’s corporate offices could turn into violent attacks against printing presses, newsrooms, fracking sites and delivery depots.
What utterly appalling monsters Murdoch/Mail/Express are – the harm they’ve done to this country and the world is immeasurable.
Always worth remembering that moderates, centrists and those crying lawbreaking are MLK’s “white moderate”;
They will decry all action to address the problem as worse than the problem *until that action reaches a crescendo and sparks change*, at which point they will only accept a version of history whereby they never decried the action, and always supported it – *but only after the battle is won*.
The condition of being a moderate/centrist is being on the winning side – which means only changing allegiance once it’s over.
In less words – there will always, always be these complaints. Always – it’s the nature of the system. But that doesn’t make them ever right, or worthy of pause, or are evidence of anything – other than that, historically, *this is how change is made*.
Should’ve left them intact, the News UK people are less likely to cook now.
I’m now living in the former American colonies, but I’m not going to brag about how I’m used to this because you never have to “get used to it” in a place where there’s air conditioning everywhere. But I want to talk about something that never gets mentioned when new heat records get set in Blighty – but there’s a huge factor in play.
#Windows. Specifically: the technology employed in windows in Britain, and how it’s different than warm countries.
>Which is why, when you choose Andersen® windows and patio doors, you know you’re getting energy-efficient products that **help reduce the transfer of heat**
There’s an international standard called the [U-Value](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermal_transmittance), but America still insists on living in the 1700s so I’ll convert the units of measurement. Where I am, the U-Value on the windows at my house are rated at 0.27 Btu/(h⋅ft²⋅°F) …that’s **1.53** W/(m²⋅°K). The windows are designed to reflect the sunlight back out and not heat up the house.
>Even though windows all look the same they don’t all perform the same – but it’s easy to compare them by looking at independently verified scores. Here’s what to look for:
>Windows that **keep the heat in** (Low U Value)
>Windows that **take the heat from the sun** (High G Value)
>Windows that **don’t let the heat out** (Low L Value)
British windows made for energy efficiency have the same coating as American windows, but it’s on the inside layer instead of the outside.
>A window’s U value is the technical way to measure heat loss. It takes into account the heat transfer from the warm side to the cold side of the window. How much heat is transferred depends on the type of glass and type of gas and spacer bar between the panes. **The lower the U value the warmer your home will be.**
>At Everest **to achieve low U values on our windows** we use Low-E glass. Low-E glass has a coating on one surface **that reflects heat energy back into the house.**
Remember the American window had a U-Value of **1.53** W/(m²⋅°K), and a lower number means a hotter house by design? In Britain and Ireland, the windows I have the link to are **1.00** W/(m²⋅°K). And they aim to get a low U-Value number too. It’s not a design flaw, it’s a design fact and even a design perk.
So that’s the first punch. British windows, because the country is closer to the North Pole than the Equator, have been designed for decades (and are still designed) to work like a greenhouse. Technologically enhanced to trap heat in the abode. Great on overcast September days. Absolute shite state of affairs for this week.
That’s only the half of it. Part two is the G-Value. Solar gain.
>The solar gain is a measurement of how a window lets heat in by capturing the sun’s rays. It is measured by the G value, on a scale between 0 and 1, with the higher number indicating high solar gain and the better your window is at capturing the sun’s free heat energy.
>**At Everest we use low iron glass in our windows to let in more of the sun’s free heat. Standard glass has a slight greenish tinge which reduces the amount of sunlight that passes through it. Low iron glass is clearer and therefore lets in more light and allows you to harvest more of the sun’s free heat energy.**
So it’s allowing in more of the light before it reflects it back into the house. A building greenhouse effect. A recipe for disaster. I’m guessing the ambulance, like any vehicle, doesn’t have glass that’s chemically created and coated to make it easier to cook dogs inside.
The third number mentioned with windows is the L number, air leakage (which should be zero for any good window anywhere in the world). That doesn’t help or hinder either way, as long as you can stop the first two things from happening.
Seeing as we’ve seen the UK and the US, what’s the Australian design for windows? [As if you couldn’t guess. Aussies use their tech to keep the heat out.](https://www.yourhome.gov.au/passive-design/glazing)
>However, inappropriate or poorly designed glazing can be a major source of unwanted heat gain in summer
…
>Conduction is how readily a material conducts heat. This is known as the U value. The U value for windows (expressed as Uw), describes the conduction of the whole window (glass and frame together). **The lower the U value, the greater a window’s resistance to heat flow and the better its insulating value.**
Smashing those windows probably saved a life.
#**TL;DR** – in hotter countries, windows are designed as heat shields. In Britain, they’re designed to be solar power multipliers.
I like a protest and when some stuff gets smashed it’s a good bit of entertainment. And yes, I really do consider it to be that frivolous, I couldn’t care less about some windows, fuck ’em, they’re their windows, not mine. Stupid windows.
maybe they were smashing the window like how people smash windows if they see a dog in a car on a hot day? they were helping those poor people inside get some fresh air
Honestly they’re not going far enough.
Should disable their air-con units too. Then they’d probably feel a bit more empathic about the situation.
Good on them, selfish twats who are just thinking about their own money are the problem
Pearl clutchers incoming.
Maybe they were saving a hot dog?
I just can’t see extinction rebellion as evil, there’s a real risk of immense suffering if change doesn’t happen and they’re only protesting and damaging property, where they damage property it’s in sensible places like banks/news outlets/oil companies. I cba to go out and actually do it but they’re pretty hard to demonise.
At least they are targeting organisations that actually are part of the problem, a big step in the right direction.
Should have sabotaged their air con instead
I don’t see what the problem is
Rupert Murdoch is the most influential person in the UK and has been since the 80s (except perhaps the Queen).
Blair and Thatcher were only there for a limited period of time.
He would not even take UK citizenship because he doesn’t want to pay tax here.
But he’s allowed to brainwash everyone for decades.
And that’s without even getting into the industrialised criminality at The News of the World.
Pretty sure News UK don’t actually own the building.
A reminder that a lot of people who work at news UK are freelance agency staff or just see it as a job and a way to make some money because everyone needs that right now.
This is not on the heads of the peons. Those on an executive level however deserve to feel it where it hurts. Right in the wallet and power.
If they peacefully protested (as in, they didn’t smash any windows) they just chanted and held signs, this wouldn’t have made the news. Smashing windows got the attention. It worked. They want people to pay attention. I personally wouldn’t have done that and I don’t condone violence in any way but I can see where they are coming from. We have a real climate emergency.
I’m not sure vandalism helps. But, fuck me, I’m out of ideas. We, as a species, seem hellbent on our own destruction.
“We had smashed windows in the 70s”
Good on them! Well done XR. This is the kind of protesting I can and will support. Let’s focus on the media and billionaires responsible for keeping many in poverty and contributing to global warming.
Not a big fan of XR but I can’t say I disagree with this action
One Show should be next ,being all jolly about the weather….
Good for them!
There is fuck all Britain can do about climate change so long as countries like China and the US continue to not care. This is a global issue that is out of our hands
Aside from all the ire on this thread, I’m just sitting here in bemusement that for all NewsUK’s many crimes, it was their heatwave coverage that finally snapped these protestors.
Good. The right wing media playing defence for fossil fuels and denying and downplaying climate change has done far, far more damage than a couple of broken windows.
id rather them cause damage to property owned by companies causing these problems than see all the fighting/ arguing about them blocking roads, good on them, hope they keep going

How is it done with good double and triple glazed windows in Britain? [You probably already guessed.](https://www.everest.co.uk/about/energy-saving/)
