Wonder if the listeners are switching stations or dieing? Or maybe both? 🤔 Ray D’Arcy also lost listeners, so maybe misery doesn’t sell.

  1. These radio shows aren’t for the listener to get their point across- it’s just a opportunity for joe and ray to ram their opinion down everyones throat

  2. I don’t really get why people listen to the radio anymore ,you can find podcasts on any topic you can think of and stream any music you like

  3. I don’t listen to the radio in the car or anywhere else for that matter and haven’t done for years.

Spotify, podcasts and audio books instead. That way you choose what music you want to hear and not what some really annoying dj wants. You don’t have ads every couple of minutes and you don’t have to listen to misery merchants like JD. No I like my misery served up on reddit

  4. Irish radio is mostly dreadful. Pay Kenny is good for current affairs. There are a few good documentaries on Sundays and lyric FM is good. The light entertainment stuff that fills in most of the other time and the diabolical comedy-ish shows in the morning are a hellscape.

So Joe Duffy, with his misery/empathy schtick doesn’t have much competition

  5. I’m subjected to Today Fm all day. Middle aged men shouting “witty banter” down the microphone with producers who clearly hate music.

  6. I know someone that listens to radio 1 religiously and if I’m in the car with them then I have to listen to it as well. Any time I try to make a point about how condescending Claire Byrne is or how much of a pain and fear monger Joe is I usually get a “ah but they are good at what they do, and sure it’s not like you could trust anyone else”

  7. Can’t stand Niall Boylen. He picks the most controversial topics to bait the mouth breathers into phoning in. I’ve heard some of the edgiest political opinions on his show

  8. If loosing 3000 listeners is news, they didn’t have great numbers to begin with. 3000 is nothing.

  9. I try to avoid stuff tied to negative emotions. That stuff pulls you down, and is going to affect your mental health. It affects mine fairly badly, and it can be hard to pull myself back out of again.

I now try to just watch stuff more tired to positive emotions. There’s enough negatively in the world (and on this sub!) already without adding to it and pulling me down even further.

  10. I’ve never understood his appeal at all. His voice is the most dreary depressing sound and I have enough to complain about myself I don’t need to hear other people complaining, usually about benign shit. Misery doesn’t actually love company!

  11. In the ten minutes i’m in the car I’d listen to the radio but you couldn’t pay me to listen to the insufferable whinge bags that call into Joe Duffy.

I know a lot of radio stations are bragging recently about being the most listened to station in the county.

  12. Every time I hear a bit of Ray Darcy, I am astonished at how poor the programme is. He is utterly clueless on every topic, he comes across as totally unprepared for every item, he presents no valuable opinions and doesn’t seem aware of anything going on in the world beyond what’s written on a piece of paper in front of him.

  13. why call the radio to one guy when you can just moan to a bunch of other redditors with the same mindset as you?

  14. The younger generations don’t need to phone into Liveline with their misery, complaints, and backward opinions. They just post on r/ireland instead.

  15. Dying of boredom maybe.

My wife and I are 28/35 and we’d just never turn RTE on. We wouldn’t even watch live TV. That’s the main issue. People are gradually moving to different consumption patterns. I’d say their listener figures will only go down from here.

  16. I detest Joe Duffy.

Demonised the public sector during the last recession, despite effectively being one of them himself.

An acquaintance of mine was involved in a debate on Joe’s show, and had his mic muted because the producer cared more about the comments from the audience – emotion over reason.

I love the fact that apparently Duffy hates his treatment on the Savage Eye. Funny stuff, but all the better knowing it makes that misery reveller squirm.

  17. I read the article and it says that 3.19 million people listen to radio every week, for an average of 4 hours a day. That can’t be right?!

  18. Is 3000 a lot or is that just 3000 new people who tuned in for the first time they counted a month ago who subsequently turned off this count around. JOE HARCORE 4EVA

  19. I’d be happy to see the end of all radio talk shows. The last thing I want to listen to on the way to and from work or anywhere for that matter, is someone droning on and on
