I do not understand what the takeaway is supposed to be. Isn’t a plane.flight better than the number of passenger cars travelling the same destination? Do I have that wrong?
Maybe we should get them fine guys and gals from the climate summits to fly over in their individual jets to have a discussion about it?
Anyone wanting a holiday should stay in this country, there’s no reason to holiday abroad.
Cooling and heating our buildings is a massively larger portion of our carbon emissions than aviation. Not saying we shouldn’t reduce aviation but it pales into comparison against the cost of heating and cooling our country
Capitalism is a death cult and we will not be able to meaningfully tackle climate change until we unlink our societies collective consciousness from the capitalist fixation on GDP and productivity.
And who is boarding those flights?
Some things are difficult to avoid the associated environmental costs. But flying is so fucking easy to avoid.
Yes we should obviously expand aviation.
Stagnating/shrinking the economy will not fix climate change.
When we don’t expand our airports, the Europeans steal our business and laugh at us. The Dutch send Heathrow a thank you cake every time we delay expanding Heathrow.
Money above all
How else do you continue the perpetual economic growth meme?
Why do so many people, especially in the press such as the guardian, talk as if fixing climate change in your immediate surroundings, spares you from global climate change? As if Mother Nature would spare the UK from suffering, by protecting a magic shield around the island, as if aware who are the good guys.
It’s a global crisis caused by a global contribution of emissions. One the UK contributes 1% in to. That means 99% of the problem is outside of the UK.
Even if the UK was wiped off the face of the earth, or never even existed, 99% of the problem would still be here today and it would still be hot.
Funny, I’d like to expand the government. Using the Catesby method.
We need to ban domestic flights in the UK, and we need to reduce the number of international flights. So what if you can’t fly to Spain for £25.
The aviation sector can’t even cope with the traffic they have now let alone an increase.
If nothing else, the hours waiting to fly out, last minute cancellations and ‘hidden’ costs have done more to put people off flying than anything else.
I really dont think you will get people to stop air travel.
Of course they do, it’ll line their pockets
Well of course they do, they dont give a shit about rising temperatures people suffering, they just want the tourism money so they can add more wings to their money forts.
So shut up and pay your taxes the PM needs a new car!
We invented railways, we should aim to have the best railways. Maybe the tories could leverage their nostalgia for something useful
And why not? Fossil fuels will almost certainly become a thing of the past but we’ll still need infrastructure capacity for air travel and freight. A lot of aviation fuel is now made with or from biofuel and Airbus are developing a hydrogen fuelled airliner.
Those airplanes better start consuming hydrogen going forward or something
