There’s now video footage of Russian troops castrating Ukrainian prisoners of war. How do you make peace with that?
Mrs. Higgins placing equal responsibility for the war on both states seems thoughtless at best. Ukraine is being invaded. Russian military are the ones that crossed the border and began hostilities. The Russian military are the side destroying and brutally ending the lives of civilians.
As a note, for another part of the article above, I approve of President Higgins’ speech on the housing crisis and how the market for such an essential thing should not be dominated and abused by private companies, as it has been for years, thereby inflating the homeless population and making rent more excruciating over time.
Mrs. Higgins sent the letter as a private individual. She didn’t emphasise her position. That should be taken into account that she isn’t trying to represent the Irish people as a whole. It still doesn’t mean it wasn’t a controversial action on her part.
Thought lessons were learned since de Valera’s condolences after Hitler’s death. Guess not.
She’s wrong. So what if Russia will inevitably win, we need to extend this war as long as possible, not enough people have died in vain yet.
Only 100s of billions of $ have been sent to Ukraine enriching the elites, we can do a lot better than that. Let’s send trillions! And who cares if sanctions are hurting us more than Russia and the ruble is performing incredibly well.
All you geopolitical experts live in fantasy land if you think Ukraine will win this war. Higgins is right, this situation will only be resolved through diplomatic talks.

The reality is that is how all wars end in lieu of an outright military victory.
