You have to wonder what she was thinking wading into all of this.
I really can’t stand all of the people calling for negotiation of a settlement. Any settlement short of complete withdrawal by Russia shouldn’t be entertained.
> The letter was also published on the Áras an Uachtaráin website this week but, by Friday evening, the letter was no longer visible on the site.
This is telling.
I can forgive Michael D and Sabina for wading into Irish affairs even though his office is supposed to be apolitical, but the letter was a bit thick.
I don’t think Ukraine should plead for a ceasefire but I also don’t think the war is going as well for them as reddit and social media armchair warriors would have us believe. I also do think that unless the West mobilize that the whole thing will drag on for decades and countless thousands will die.
In summary: the west could be doing much more if they want Ukraine to “win” but we’re not.
Sabina Higgins if we’re honest is a bit of dumb cunt and should be careful what she says given her husband is head of state.
Another thing this lefty western guilt shit has to come to an end for mainstream left leaning political party’s, it’s time they grew up and left student politics behind. Imagine the British started invading us again and started ro retake key ports in Cork and Donegal because we’re in the EU and there paranoid and gobshites like Sabina wanting us to accept loss of territory to an aggressor.
Nothing remotely controversial with the letter from Sabina Higgins. That her rather modest opinion is not debated on the merits and demerits of what she wrote is a rather sad state of affairs. There is a type of McCarthy-esque climate surrounding the war in Ukraine, rather unfortunately.
One that lacks nuance and demonises dissent.
That the rather common sense acceptance that post-Yanukovych though there were many problems Ukraine faced these problems ought to have been dealt with by Ukraine has shifted to a simplistic narrative about how ‘this is nothing less than a grand ideological battle about ‘democracy’ and ‘liberalism’ and so on’.
If one accepts such a narrative, it becomes rather difficult to acknowledge the reality of Ukrainian demographics; the increasing authoritarianism; supply-chain implications, and the very nature of conflict resolution without being labeled a ‘Putin apologist’.
People seem to forget that given the revolutions of 1989 were (predominantly) nationalist in origin (rather than based on liberalism as hoped by much of the commentariat of that era) that it laid the groundwork for Fidesz and Viktor Orbán, to just use one example.
I suspect long-term there are going to be many people very dissatisfied with what happens in Ukraine in the future.
Inb4, ‘tankie’.
>I will give a simple example. Somewhere in Ireland someone came to your house, killed your family, and tried to take it from you. Will you negotiate? Like, take a half of it and let’s live like this. It’s ridiculous. We can’t give up our country’s future.
This is exactly what happened with the foundations of both the North and South.
As much as we all abhor war, is there a single person left on earth that believes that Russia would honour any sort of ceasefire agreement for more than a few minutes? They made a big show of sending missiles into Odessa port the same day they allowed grain export to resume.
Cant believe this woman has an opinion AND expressed it. Sickening. World is gone to pot
When I first saw this letter my heart dropped. at the Áras an Uachtaráin site! How more official can you get even? I am ukrainian refugee myself and this is just devastating to realize and the people of the country that hosting you are willing for your own country that is fighting for survival to just crumble and be destroyed. But the thing is that you cannot negotiate with a terrorist state. The goal of a terrorist state is not to controll territories, is to deal as much damage as possible, kill as many as possible.
Seeing pro-russian irish people makes me feel unsafe.
