
Today is the 78th Anniversary of Warsaw Uprising, largest resistance military action directed against the German army. Started by Polish Home Army, it lasted 63 days and cost around 200,000 lives. In reprisal Germans executed thousands of civilians and systematically razed Warsaw to the ground.

And Stalin (who is currently revered in Russia again) ensured that the USSR did not come to the aid of the uprisers, instead hoping it would damage both Germany, and any future resistance from a Soviet occupied Poland.
