Archie Battersbee: Last-minute hearing to be held over treatment

  1. This is all being driven by anti-abortion whackjobs who want the law to say a heartbeat is a sign of life. The poor child has no chance of survival and zero dignity. It’s deeply unfair on medical staff to demand they keep this invasive pointless intervention going. The kindest thing to do is to let him pass.

  2. What treatment is there for brain stem death, and a brain rotting in to liquid and dripping down your spinal column?

The media really isn’t helpful in this case. Medical professionals have declared him dead. Nothing to be done. There is also 0 evidence he was taking part in an online challenge.

Every article I read uses ambiguous language when not quoting. It isn’t helpful.

  3. > His mother said she wanted a “realistic time” for her child to recover.

So the mother has flip flopped from wanting the poor boy to die ‘naturally’ (whatever that means) to wanting him to recover. I can’t fathom what it must be like to have a child die but this has become a very grim spectacle.

  4. Why are they still fighting this, why are they not spending these last moments peacefully with their son, saying goodbye?

I cannot understand the motivation behind forcing your child’s body to decompose in front of you? I know that losing a child is possibly the worse experience a human can endure, I can’t imagine the pain. But the evidence is clear, and he needs to go with whatever dignity he has left.

Is this all because hardcore Christians believe that those who die by suicide go to hell? Is that why the mum is adamant is was an online challenge, and adamant that the cause of death needs to be something other than self-inflicted? I’m not clued up on religious ‘rules’, but is this all just some elaborate coping mechanism to try and mitigate the inevitable guilt that comes with knowing that your child was trying to end his life?

  5. The mother said on the radio this morning that Archie has shown signs of progression, anyone know what specifically she is referring too?

  6. It is just pointlessly cruel to the memory of the boy to be doing this. Maybe one day the parents will recognise the fools they’re making of themselves.

  7. I actually want it to be heard by every applicable court because then it can be rejected by every one, setting a useful precedent for the future, hopefully avoiding similar cases from being prolonged for so long.

  8. Still flogging this dead horse with endless ” appeals”..accept the judgement and get the bed back for those who might still benefit from medical intervention. At this rate it’ll be his first xmass crap…

  9. What’s there to discuss? He is dead, medically dead. Some machines might be pumping blood around his body and filling his lungs with oxygen but there is no person there. It’s just turning into a weird mummification.

  10. Poor fucking kid. Is all I can think when seeing this circus shit going on.

Has to suffer living his life as a potato because of selfish adults.

  11. I’m going to say it, but it almost seems like Munchausen’s syndrome in that the mum is centre of attention while all this is happening. The longer it is drawn out, the more attention and lucrative deals and interviews she may get.

Hopefully it’s not that, and she’s just ignorant of common sense and the advice given by medical professionals.

  12. This poor young boy and his family are being used as political pawns by far right pro lifers and his parents are too stricken by grief they can’t see it.

Must be awful to lose your child, my heart breaks for them.

  13. Archie Battersbee is dead. 100000% dead. It’s sickening to see his basket-case parents parading around his artificially maintained corpse for media attention and clicks.

Not to mention denying the bed and care to a child which actually has the slightest chance to recover.

The law should be amended to prevent these scenarios from being dragged out by parents who refuse to accept the fact that their child is dead.

  14. The child is only being kept alive for others. What is best for him is not really being taken into consideration by his parents. There is no quality of life. It’s a sad horrible situation that we can all hope to never be in, but they need to let him go. Just prolonging the inevitable, really. He is no longer there, just his body. What is right must come above feelings. I can’t see the hearing going the parents way, just like it didn’t for that little baby a few years ago. The child’s wellbeing comes before parents wants

  15. It was very unfortunate to see the mother on the news earlier clearly saying the whole thing was no longer about the welfare and dignity of her child, but was now all about her.

  16. Why are they continually dragging this out? I’m afraid my patience is wearing thin with this. If it’s God’s will that he live, turn off the machines.

Fact is, he’s already dead, it’s unfair on the NHS staff who are working hard every day to be subjected with abuse over this. It’s also blocking machinery that could be used on someone who is still alive and has a chance of survival.

  17. This poor wee boy needs to be allowed to die with some degree of dignity. I work for the NHS, if health professionals felt he had a chance they’d do everything to save him. He’s fed through a tube, then he gets diarrhoea so the feed has to be stopped so he can be given medication to stop the diarrhoea. Then the feed gets restarted… vicious cycle. He’s on a cocktail of meds just to keep his organs functioning.
His brain continues to deteriorate and die. I read his head has started to cone, and his brain fluid is leaking into the spinal cord, which is why the usual tests for death can’t be effectively used – hence the use of ‘likely dead’. It’s also why she hasn’t released an updated picture of him.
Some nut jobs claim the NHS wants to kill him for his organs, but I believe they’re essentially useless at this point as he’s only kept alive by a ventilator, and his organs continues to shut down.
His mum has claimed various stupid theories and justifications as to why he should continue to be ventilated, and she’s supported by religious fanatics. I feel sorry for her, but even sorrier for her son.

  18. Lovely to see vile US, religious, shit politics leaking like a broken sewer pipe into our country.

Can we get some paid healthcare next or maybe gun violence? I want the whole starter pack.

  19. This is absolutely devastating.. Just let the poor little boy go. Let his body find peace. Absolute wackjobs prolonging it as far as this. As I mother I couldn’t imagine the nightmare she is and had been faced with, but it’s time for him to be at peace.

  20. My mum worked for the nhs for over 30 years. Do you guys have any idea how many parents watch their child die in A&E? A lot of parents don’t get to say goodbye and doctors will quickly ask the parent do you want to not resuscitate. They even talk about hospital resources. I don’t think this is fair on the poor baby’s soul. He’s being kept alive for his parents. Which isn’t wrong but after a while you have to ask yourself, are you keeping him alive because he will wake (he won’t according to the doctors) or for themselves and a temporary peace of mind?

  21. I’d listened to the mother on radio 4 this morning and she made it seem like he was showing signs of progress but assume that can’t be true?

Also she mentioned there was an American doctor saying he or she could help the child but I seem to remember the same thing happening with another British child that the parents fought to keep alive when all hope was lost.

Shitty situation for everyone involved, It’s a situation I hope never to be a part of

    Edit:
The other case I remember was the case of Alfie Evans

  22. To sump up the case: he’s just as dead as disco. Brain’s mush. Can’t recover. Literally alive because of machines. Necrosis already set in. Mother and some Facebook religious zealots don’t give up because they claim magic sky daddy is going to bring him back and the hospital want’s to kill him. Mom seems to be a Prime-Karen by playing the grief strucken mother-card, telling lies to rile up her supporters and cashes in legal fee donations even though her case is pro bono.

Can somebody explain to me why this lady is allowed to waste away NHS and court ressources because obviously she’s in for the fame and cash and not her son anymore?

This is a tragic shit show. You guys need to change your laws.

  23. The Mum changed her name a few years ago. was previously known as Lisa Pittaway. She makes interesting reading of many of her previous exploits.
