Only a country as complacent as the UK could give up its border privilege so easily

  1. > Your grievances will then be trivialised by Brexit evangelists.

That’s how it works now. Point out a problem, they pretend it doesn’t matter (after pretending it wouldn’t happen, and then denying it was happening). It’s the narcissist’s prayer, with a couple of extra lines …

    That will never happen.
    That’s not happening.
    That didn’t happen.
And if it did, it wasn’t that bad.
And if it was, that’s not a big deal.
And if it is, that’s not my fault.
And if it was, I didn’t mean it.
    And if I did…
    You deserved it.

  2. Except the flip side of this border privilege involves leaving our borders open to the whole of Europe, and in case the writer of this article has failed to notice, the UK is already full to bursting

  3. Meanwhile non EU workers are arriving here with full qualifications and skills to take away local jobs and opportunities to enrich themselves.

Brexit was a stupid idea for the locals but a great idea for the capitalists who wanted less regulation. See, how they are playing with the Northern Ireland protocols? Watch them rework this freedom of movement under the guise of allowing in EU workers to support with severe shortages.

In summary, we would still have non of the protections of being in the EU but Brexit will be watered down to allow a certain type of free movement. Congratulations for playing yourselves

  4. >the benefits we have lost can be clawed back by those who have the most – the fast tracks, the travel insurance, the funds and the time.

Well, Tory objections to free movement was always about the hoi polloi, not people ‘like us’, so very much working as intended.

  5. Brexiteers love to gaslight the rest of us about the ‘opportunities’ of their Russiafied campaign to decimate all the last British industries while enriching hedge funds, but everything I’ve seen so far from Brexit has just been ladelling more shit into the shit sandwich

  6. Man the Guardian is such a great newspaper isn’t it? Totally a reliable & superb source of information, not a vitriolic rag no better than the Daily Mail. Totally of value, absolutely.

  7. Given that a lot more people are trying to get into the UK rather than out, I’m not sure that having effectively open borders is a price worth paying to save a few travellers filling in some forms.

Unsustainable population growth, demographic change, reduction in societal trust and charity, clashing values; versus a minor convenience.

  8. I’m marrying my french gf in a month – don’t want to trivialise it, but basically it’s because of brexit. I can’t be there with her and support myself without a visa, and the only way of getting one is through marriage. Then I’m applying for French dual citizenship as soon as I can.

I love most of you and I wish you all the very best, because this ain’t it.
