Don’t worry, the new PM is going to cut taxes in a way that doesn’t help much and continue the last half generation of grinding austerity on government services.
This winter is going to fuck a lot of people financially and energy companies are making money hand over fist.
What’s the point of a price cap to protect consumers if it’s increased at the drop of a hat to protect corporations?
I’m fucked if we have a cold winter….there’s only so many jumpers I can wear, being on prepayment sucks
I am out of ideas… I do not see the point of working and all that anymore, when all my savings are evaporating faster than water evaporating in the Sahara
I dread the start of the month watching over 1k leave my account to pay rent, council tax and energy bills.
Doesn’t help that all the big brands and corporations are making record profits yet are raising prices because they see it as an excuse to squeeze a few extra quid out of people. The CEO wants to try and buy a 5th Lamborghini this year after all.
People in the UK should start guerrilla installing solar en mass. The UK rules for solar installs are ridiculously draconian and the install prices are obscene in comparison to the hardware prices.
I understand its another out of pocket cost but for about 1500 pounds people could start to significantly reduce their energy bills, with the payback coming in around 2 years or so.
I’m currently living in the Netherlands where self install is 100% legal and has proven so far to be acceptably safe where practical (ie a flat roof, garage, balcony, building wall or a ground mount). Our solar array has really taken the sting out of the energy price rises and a self (or even assisted) install puts those savings within reach of lower and middle income households.
Apologies, rant over.
I was thinking yesterday about global inequality and capitalism. How our current lifestyle depends on poorer countries existing so we can manufacture/grow things cheaply there. But a lot of those countries are becoming more wealthy, which is a good thing for their societies. But it means the current Western consumer system either gets more expensive and we adjust to a less wasteful, less profit driven balance (unlikely even though it’s what the planet needs), or the capitalists rely on a domestic underclass who can do the low paid and dirty jobs locally to keep prices down and continue the hedonistic consumer spiral. I get the feeling this is the beginning of that. Make people desperate enough and they will work any job, they will accept shitty wages. If you’re starving or being crushed by a mortgage and bills, then you can’t afford to strike.
This is whilst billionaires get richer and richer and companies make record profits, whilst the rest of us are told to ‘tighten our belts’.
We are being robbed blind and taken for absolute mugs by the Tories and the wealthy.

I would laugh if it wasn’t so serious – people will go hungry and die of the cold this winter.
Isnt it funny how after many people saw disposable income increase during covid, theres now a corrective measure to get that back.
Cant have the plebs having too much freedom.
Spent years saving for a deposit and now its trickling away because everything has magically gone up. Including house prices.
I am by no means in a position that I am struggling but I am not sure where I could make cuts in my general budget that isn’t just cancelling Netflix, Spotify or venturing out of the house on the weekend. I could make big improvements to my flat but as I hope to sell soon I don’t want to be paying for that.
Food is already pretty basic as I am vegetarian and I make all my own food. I’m also dieting so I am not buying loads of shit food (although the junk food is way cheaper than buying fruit and veg). I work from home every day so there is no fuel cutting or public transport costs I could remove.
Radiators have been off since March but when they do go on later in the year they are storage heaters so they kind of have to be on or off and with a 18month old daughter, I can’t have the place cold. She is in nursery only two days a week but that is needed for her to get some social time with other kids and to get some work in on those days.
Where do people save their money on a daily basis that I am missing?
The only waay I could make more cuts is if I go back to how my dad raised me.
Malnourished to the point of hospitalisation.
Don’t worry – the Tories will rake it in and the media will blame it all on the poor and foreigners (poor ones not billionaires).
I dread the winter & more price rises, there’s nothing to cut, we have other bills to pay & pets to look after
Next year with the predicted prices our electricity company is going to have to go whistle for it or put there prices back down to a acceptable level
Not ideal at all but expected it to be more.
Haha not my household. Wife’s just signed us up to another streaming service. 😡
Seven out of eight families are able to make further cuts
