Hinkley B: UK’s most productive nuclear power plant closes

  1. It takes about a decade to build a new reactor. If only The Last Labour Government™ were planning for their replacement. Oh wait, we’ve had over a decade of useless Tories.

  2. To be fair we’ve been building a replacement in Hinkley C.

Just as pro-Nuclear types never seem to grasp, it has taken well over a decade just to get to the early stages of construction it is now at, will take *at least* around another decade before it is even capable of generating power, which is then tied in at a rate that is already significantly more expensive than wind or solar energy costs to produce *today*.

I’m not sure why this idea that we can build thousands of these plants up and down the globe to meet our future energy demands is so prevalent when it already seems like such a huge effort for a pretty damn advanced economy to build a single one, on top of a site that already has all the required infrastructure and ground clearance in place. Imagine trying to build ten of these fuckers in the Congo basin or up in the Andes lmao.

  3. Visited there when I was a kid. Loud AF. Very interesting.

You can definitely see progress on Hinkley-C as you drive past, especially in the last 5 years, so hopefully that’ll be up and running soon!

  4. *sigh*

I also heard my town’s NPP is begining decommisioning after having it’s life extended multiple times.

Now our Gen 2 AGR’s have been prooven over the years and haven’t suffered major incidents for what i know soo idk why they don’t delay the decommisioning till the new reactors have actually fucking been built.

  5. “So, the only way to make up the shortfall will be more gas power. The result, say energy experts, is unavoidable price rises.”

Didn’t realise gas was the only means of generating electricity. All those Solar cells and wind turbines must be for show then.

    Really is a shit article

  6. Finding 10% efficiency in the social protection budget would fund an entire Hinkely-C scale nuclear power station project *every year*. What’s more important?

  7. Good job that over 33% of our electricity generated today is renewable. (it would be slightly higher but we’re exporting to France at the moment as their nukes are playing up so we’re helping them out)

  8. Off. Shore. Wind. Farms.

Jow say it again but change a word.

    On. Shore. Wind farms.

Or just turn people’s electric off for a few hours at night during the colder days. Then save all that energy in a tupperware container and take it out when you need it later on.
