Rishi Sunak builds private pool at mansion as local swimming baths face closure

  1. As if we needed more proof the man was completely out of touch and also his PR team is dreadful because youd expect atleast one of them to point out maybe this isn’t the right time to be spending thousands on a swimming pool during a cost of living crisis where millions are going to struggle to pay their bills let alone build a pool.

  2. Stated this elsewhere. He’s a rich person spending money he’s not the only one nor is he the last.

Is he out of touch? Maybe. But let’s face it none of the other Tories are in touch, nearly all went to Oxford/Cambridge & live a completely different class of lifestyle compared to the general population..

But the press drawing these analogies seem to be Clickbait – do they expect him to fund the swimming pool? It’s had tons of funding already.

Richmond’s swimming pool is fantastic given the area and location; many places that are bigger or large towns don’t even have swimming pools.

The council have just increased the tax payers funding for the pool on an annual basis & 1/3 of the councils council tax income is being spent on improvements this year (its over a million).

This is all despite the pool not actually being financially viable and unable to build a surplus of funds itself.

The big issue is the trust that runs the pool asked for somewhere near £3 million total in aid but haven’t been able to provide to the council how this money would be spent.

You would assume energy bills but why couldn’t they state that?

It seems the pool is badly run in economic terms and needs an overhaul in that sense because even before these bills it’s constantly going cap in hand to the council.

The government certainly needs to look at what more it can do around energy for consumers and business/charities alike but I think the onus needs to be on helping people who can’t heat or afford to heat their home and such first

  3. I wonder what insane policy he will announce in response to this story? Maybe send asylum seekers to Mars and abolish the tax system entirely.

  4. Lets be honest about this, if you had the sort of money his wife had, wouldn’t you have a private pool? I know I would.

  5. People saying the cases are not linked are missing the point. Conservatives like Sunak support policies that underfund public services like swimming pools because THEY don’t need them.

  6. I think Rishi has done an awful job, but I really don’t care if they want to build a pool in their home.

They’re wealthy, they’re going to live like wealthy people.

  7. Well I think it’s fair to say that they’re trying to get Truss to hold the fort until Boris 2.0 returns.
She can be easily influenced and controlled to do what they want.

  8. Good for him. Hope he enjoys his pool. I personally wish I could afford one because I just live in a modest ex council house but I don’t envy that others have resources that I don’t. One day I will have collected enough to hopefully have my own.

  9. IN MY OPINION THIS IS A SLAP IN THE FACE OF LOW INCOME FAMILY’S THERE FOR ARE WE GOING TO CONTINUE THIS SHIT TOO HAPPEN OR ARE WE GOING TO STAND UP AND SAY ENOUGH IS ENOUGH ? I will be the first too stand up too this Shit

  10. I’m not his fan but I don’t get this particular smear piece. Like so what?

If my local library closes am I no longer allowed to own my own books because there’s other people that can’t afford books?

  11. Pointless and lazy article to antagonise the working class masses with a “look how wealthy” they are attitude.

The problem with Uk politics is we have no suitable opposition to give the Tories a run for their money. Green and Lib debs marginalised by the countries need for materialism and capitalism and labour are the closest they have been to Tory ideology in British history.

  12. All of these politicians are completely out of touch with the real world. They live in their buddle of luxury and have no idea the struggles people are facing or how hard things can be. This is just the way it is. To get to these positions you must be in a certain class.

  13. My local swimming pool had a representative knock on my door the other day, asking if I would like to make a donation towards it.

I said, “Sure.”, and gave him a cup of water!

  14. I’m not a Tory but I don’t expect rich people, even politicians, to pretend to be like the man on the street.

These kind of stories will ruin his chances though.
