    If James Connolly was about today with a Twitter account and media reporting his every doing, he’d say some stupid shit from time to time.

  5. Good ol Communism, I don’t know why we don’t emulated the communist paradises like the USSR, China and North Korea.

    North Korea is closest country that is truly communist, China larps as Communist when it suits them.

    Connolly lived in a time where Communism was new and a bunch of bright eyed rebels were talking about throwing off the shackles of oppressive Bourgeoisie and then those bright eyed rebels were some of the worst dictators in modern history.

    There is no such thing as a Communist country because it doesn’t work.

    Anybody talking about seizing the wealth or waving around a hammer and sickle is a teenager who should be mocked.

    Capitalism is a extremely flawed system, uber capitalism like the USA can go to hell but I would rather live in the Ireland we live in now than some Communist Ireland.

    A Capitalist society with a good dose of Socialism is best, a society where you can thrive but not fall through the cracks would be ideal.

  6. The Yanks had to create a boogeyman in order for their either/or fallacy to work. For example, if you criticise capitalism with an aim to improve the flaws within the system, you’re automatically an evil Commie and should be dismissed/ignored/ridiculed etc. It’s an effective trick that is used so often today.

  7. I couldn’t give a fuck if Connolly said we should have become the 16th Soviet republic, I’m plenty able to make up my own mind on the issue.

    There’s plenty to admire about Connolly but holding up a quote of his, or any other historical figure, as some sort of gotcha rather than making arguments for yourself is incredibly stupid.

  11. The U.S. has put decades and billions into P.R. making their population hate themselves and think acting in their own interest is evil communism. It’s not surprising that a lot of yokes here got swept up in it.

    Hate to break it to you fellas, if most of your money has come from working then you are the working class. If most of your income has come from owning factories/ properties/ land/ companies etc. then you are a capitalist. That’s just what those words mean.

    Fucking numpties shouting “I work hard so I’m a capitalist”. Yeah. And I walk around on my feet so I’m a fish.

  15. People don’t read there history. Almost every national hero for almost every country had socialist ideals. The people now want to make any ideals like that a bad thing because it effects their power.

  19. James Connolly, I have such admiration and respect for this great, great man. A hero through and through. We owe him so much that we can never repay the sacrifice he made for us all. James Connolly, I salute you.

  23. Connolly also made a huge impact on America. He helped start the IWW which is a big activist union in America and one of the early impacts on the American labor movement.

    Today, the Republic has a free market economy, is wealthy and functions reasonably well, despite the general caustic whining of the Left.
