Hi all, one thing I find confusing about Germany is this, I find “Kultur” appears quite often as prefix in food, fine dining.

examples are “Kultur” before the fruits:

and before the restaurants:

KulturKantine Berlin Mitte-Prenzlauer Berg

I thought it literally means “cultural” and there is no extending meaning as on the dictionary that I use. So what does this mean, and on what can it actually apply to?

  1. In the case of the fruit it means cultivated instead of wild ones. And in the case of KulturKantine it just means culture.

  2. “Kulturgemüse ist ein Sammelbegriff für alle kultivierten, also vom Menschen angebauten Gemüsearten. Im Gegensatz dazu ist Wildgemüse wildwachsende, ohne direktes menschliches Einwirken gewachsenes Gemüse.”

“Cultivated vegetables is a collective term for all cultivated, i.e. man-grown, vegetables. In contrast, wild vegetables are wild vegetables grown without direct human intervention.”

Kultur depends on the context what it means
