I’m on a road trip, loving it, but the speed limits make absolutely no sense to me

  1. Oh we still do the axe thing, not that long ago there was an execution on the local maxbo in notodden

  2. 70kph has a considerably higher chance of survival than 80kph in the event of a crash.

Also, all speed limits in Norway are a function of visibility, road curvature (breaking distance before hitting an obstruction or going off-road), pedestrian access, separation between opposing lanes and more.

Basically we operate with two speed limits: Inside (50) and outside (80) population centers – these are then adjusted up or down based on the factors above. If you see a dashed out and grey 50-sign, that means you revert to the 80-limit.

Special rules apply for motorways, but they are still subject to curvature and lane separation etc

  3. On this issue, they’re right. When I drive in the UK (the country in which I learned to drive), I’m always taken aback by the excessively high speed limits.

Norway’s road death stats speak for themselves. This in a country with ice, high rainfall, low sun angles, an urbanised population and winter darkness.

  4. Traffic accidents inside tunnels, especially long ones are horrible. MUCH worse than an equivalent one outside. Access is very hard, there is smoke, possibility of more fires, queues and yeah.

Anything to reduce the chances of accident in a tunnel is a good thing. The “cost” of slightly lower speed in a tunnel is negligible compared to the costs of increased chance of accidents.

Also, we’ve gone off the idea of rape and murder for income.

  5. The speeds limits mean you get to enjoy not only the beautiful nature, but also the beautiful engineering of the country. Driving so slowly gives you time to marvel at the beautiful fjords and mountains as well as marvel at the amazing feats of engineering that went into drilling an 8km tunnel under a mountain that’s capped by a glacier. Put on a good tunnel driving tune and enjoy your slow journey into the centre of the mountain, or over an impressive suspension bridge, etc…

Seriously though, roads are given speed limits based on several factors including road safety in the case of a crash (“safer” to crash at 70kmh than at 80kmh), the frequency of accidents/traffic/animals on the road, and what speeds the road was designed for (not all roads are built like the autobahn). Enjoy your slightly more relaxing road trip.

  6. Having seen firsthand what high speed traffic accidents look like (where you can’t even make out that the jumbled, twisted ball of metal was ever a car), and knowing the accident rates of countries with high speed limits, I’m completely fine with lower speed limits.

  7. They make more sense when you realize the country is covered in ice and snow for most of the year, and most people seem to be surprized by it year after year.

  8. If the speed limits truly make no sense to you, then you should absolutely drive (alone and as fast as you are able) straight into the side of a mountain. This will effectively solve two issues. One is your lack of sense, and, well, so is the other. Have a smashing day.

  9. 80km/h is great for low rev, high gear, low drag efficient driving. It only works if everyone is doing 80 though.

  10. Norway has a goal of having zero traffic deaths. And it works! Look up the statistics. Despite having so many issues like snowstorms, ice, heavy winds, terrible roads etc, Norway still has very few traffic deaths compared to other counties. And that’s in large part to the low speed limits.

  11. Complaining about speed limit in tunnels in Norway is silly tho. Most people don’t realise how dangerous it is to travel through a tunnel.

  12. This reminds me when my friends had a Swedish friends over, and he was driving us since he at that time had a licence and we other was still in the middle of getting it. We where driving the roads close to my house and we asked him what he thought of the road as it was a 60 speed limit and he said it was OK, we then informed him that it was just been lowering down from an 80 speed limit and he lost it bc he couldn’t understand how a such crocked and full of swings road with either high rocks on each side, or the periodically ocean close on one side, mountains close in the other could ever be a 80 speed limit road. On a stretch of less then 100 meter 3 (seperated incidents) youths had died driving in less then 5 years. It was a road close to very popular bathing and hiking places, and this road had no sidewalks or lights since the road was too small for it.
And we had to *argue* with the road authority to get it down to a 60.

  13. Coming from a country where speeds on national roads are usually 90km/h, express ways are 110, highways are 130 and drivers usually go way beyond that, driving in Norway has been so comfortable in the 2 weeks I’ve visited that I ended up driving slower at all times. Makes for a much more pleasant trip to just set a lower speed and enjoy a chat with the wife.

  14. the person who made this has never seen an accident in a tunnel before and how it really cripples a road. and he knows it a long tunnel….its like logic left this persons head

  15. Did you just get a ticket for speeding in a tunnel?🤦‍♂️ Oddly specific example..

Take a look at Norways roads. Winding one-lane mountain and costal roads along the whole country. Use your brain.

  16. 1. Thats not what the typical Norwegian during the Viking age did. They took over their dads Farm at the age of 12 and did farm work for the rest of their lives (source: was in the Lofotr Viking museum yesterday)

    2. In many parts of Norway you are sharing the main roads with bikes and hikers. Streets are curvy and slim. At least in the north. High speads would be so fucking dangerous.

  17. Let me explain… wait,

Let me enlighten all of you why speed limit will never work and why 80 km/h is dangerous for some:

There is a significant large number of the population, about 10-15% that falls asleep at such a low speed, because it gets spare brain cycles to do something else instead of being focused on the drive. Too slow, not enough info to the brain -> distracted.

The problem is not the speed at which you limit, the problem is people don’t know their own personal limit and drive beyond what they can.

Youngsters, wanna be F1 drivers, alcoholics, bitcoin billionaire with lambos, sons of rich parents that didn’t educate their kids, etc.

In essence, no speed limit will ever work for everybody and some part of the population will always have to suffer because to save brain dead people, people with a fast processing brain and good eyes will have to live like a brain dead person.

i vote for progressive rules. You start at 18, after 5 years if your track record is good you get a 20% increase.

clean record after 10 you get a 20% increase, etc. So that you can live up to your potential.

Instead if you fuck up on day 1, too bad, stick to the limit or we shred your license

Now you can go ahead and down vote me with style.
