Good night for Irish soccer, well needed boost. Hopefully one or both can make it to the group stage.
Really feel like the league has been turning a corner in the past few years. Delaney is gone, attendances are up, European results are getting better, kids are sticking around to play for LOI teams rather than leaving for the UK at 16, players are attracting more interest from places like Italy and then you have the clubs marketing themselves properly and doing actual good in the community whilst the standard is getting better too.
Really exciting to wonder where the league will be in another 10 years or so with things like the Dalymount redevelopment and similar projects and if the league as a whole keeps making forward steps, could be a huge turning point for Irish football.
Great night for Irish club soccer.
I know a lot of people here aren’t interested in the LOI but the better the clubs do on the international stage and the more experience they get there, the better their chances are of selling players to England and Scotland, competing in decent leagues, and Scotland, and it gives a bigger pool for the national team.
I don’t expect Pats to get past CSKA Sofia and I don’t expect Sligo to get past Stavanger, but they’re neither of them impossible ties.
The Conference League is the sort of thing that was made for leagues like ours and hopefully in a couple of years we’ll have a team directly into the group stages of it.
I watched the penalty shootout on the FotMob app, think it was more stressfull than actually watching it live. X for Mura, then X for Pats, then waiting for Pats 5th which would have won it only to see X pop up, but that last X for Mura’s last kick, ah yes! Well done Pats.
