European evolution on Taiwan (ROC) and China (PRC)

  1. Ignoring PRC was in the long term simply untenable.

The correct way ahead would be to recognize the 2 as independent. But even ROC adheres to One China policy.

  2. Sino-Sovjet split was the reason that ROC lost its seat at UN in 1971 and US recognised PRC but to keep PRC at check they made Tawian relations act in 1979.

  3. To be fair that is a weird map, that does not mean most of western europe don’t recognize Taiwan as independant

  4. map nonsense imagine that now all the countries of Europe would say in all seriousness that the law of the Chinese government is the government in Taiwan, it was logical like at first yes it was possible to pretend that the government in Taiwan would someday be able to return to mainland China and they had it grounds for Mao almost destroyed all of China, but now it is obvious to everyone that this is not possible. like a couple of years ago, the constitution of Taiwan still states that they are the legitimate government of China and claim all of China, you just have to hope that one day China will calm down and recognize Taiwan as an independent state.

  5. This is correct, but in order to interpret this data more background is needed.

Taiwan lost most of its international recognition during the 1960s and 1970s, when it was ruled by the murderous dictatorship of Chiang Kai-shek. Chiang was a disgraced former leader of China, who used the opportunity of the post-WW2 chaos to occupy Taiwan (then a Japanese territory), and then was forced to flee there with his army after losing to Mao in China. Naturally, it was hard for Chiang and the KMT (his party) to accept that their rule was now effectively limited to the territory ~300 times smaller [than the land they used to reign in](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_of_China_(1912%E2%80%931949)), and thus the idea of the [“Free China” that was about to “Retake the Mainland”](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_National_Glory) was born.

The very concept of mutually exclusive diplomatic recognition, all claims to the Chinese territory, forced sinicization of the Taiwanese, and even the “Republic of China” name which to this day still is the official moniker of Taiwan, were all invented and implemented by Chiang and the KMT. The Taiwanese have a very different idea on [what their country is and where it should stand](https://laorencha.blogspot.com/2022/02/is-taiwan-independence-mainstream.html), and ever since Taiwan democratized, they’ve been working hard to undo the damage done. However, now they’re facing other difficulties, namely the pressure of China (PRC) which goes to the most ridiculous measures in order to give the international public the impression that Taiwan somehow belongs to them.

So yes, technically Taiwan has been leaking allies. But the reason it’s been so is Chiang (long dead) and the KMT (long an opposition party, currently rapidly losing popularity). In fact, recently Taiwan has been quietly gaining more and more support on the unofficial level. Behind closed doors, the politicians talk about supporting Taiwan all the time and the [current visit by Pelosi](https://taipeitimes.com/News/front/archives/2022/08/03/2003782880) is yet another demonstration of the US commitment to Taiwan (though they’re clearly not ready for more high-profile visits, this is already a big progress from what it used to be just a few years ago).
