Was chatting to the father about reducing herd size here to cut emissions and he was all for it, but the idea of reducing his own intake of meat and dairy was outrageous to him. I can’t see much point in reducing our herds only to buy in more meat and dairy..
Not with that cow looking at me, no. Raises bad memories
Expecting downvotes but I would only do this is it was a world wide initiative. Pointless for someone in Ireland to do when the likes of Brazil are quadrupling their herds and the big polluters like China and America don’t give a rashers about any of this.
I think it would be important to get South American ranchers (and others of course) to stop cutting down rainforests along with reducing pollution from the worst industries first.
If we are going to do it we should ban the import of beef.
No point reducing our herd if we still consume the same amount of beef, producing the same amount of methane but with the added carbon from importing it from South America.
We produce enough beef for our own consumption and produce a better quality too.
I have already reduced my meat intake, I love a good steak but I keep it for a treat like most other meats nowadays.
I’m basically dairy free already, beef is either expensive or you slow cook it for a looong time and who wants to do that in the summer (well not me in my studio flat).
The individual can’t keep shouldering this responsibility. Even our farming industry is a drop in the ocean.
I already have cut down my beef intake quite a lot. I basically no longer cook beef at home.
Id eat it out in a restaurant. My idea being if I’m going to eat it less, when I do eat it I might aswell have it cooked by a good chef(i.e not me).
I have flirted with the idea of moving to oat milk or something over the last while. I will probably try it soon. Not sure how it will go in tea tho.
Cheese is where I would probably struggle to cut down.
I don’t eat beef or pork, honestly don’t find them as nice as Chicken. I’ve had an impossible burger and really enjoyed it. Honestly, there’s an unnecessary stigma towards just giving up beef and pork but it’s honestly not that hard.
Fake meat is now grand. A blind test of the burger from burgerking and you can probably tell which is which but only with trying.
Oat milk is also grand. Put it in your coffee for a week and I doubt you will miss cow milk
Giving up beef and milk is grand. And if you do get a craving go eat it. They are asking for reductions not everyone to go veggie
No, Ireland is responsible for an estimated 0.1% of global emissions, cutting back is going to do absolute fuck all in stopping global warming and only contribute to the price of living crisis. We should be focusing on laying the groundworks for green energy and becoming energy independent.
I’d support corporations being forced to cut emissions, given that they are responsible for roughly 77% of world pollution. ‘Carbon footprint’ is a nonsense
This might be a stupid question but say for a beef farmer, if they reduce their herd would it be worth the work for them as in would they be making money? I haven’t come across one beef farmer who isn’t in a second job. Could be a very stupid question but sure I had to ask it
Already have but not to help cut emissions. Its cheaper and healthier.
Yes: went vegetarian a few years ago for this reason and cause animals are cool
I have done – go Vegan – it’s easier than you think – eating guilt free is fabulous.
Nowadays with all the choice out there its an easy task.
Already have, and I feel better for it. Not veggie or vegan or anything but stopped with the notion that every meal must contain some meat. Wallet feels better, bowels feel A LOT better, and I’ve discovered I really fucking like courgettes, who knew?
For those who don’t think they can go 100% veggie, its worth noting that some change is better than no change. In terms of efficiency of the 3 main types of meat consumed (regarding land use and effect on climate) Beef is the worst, then pork, then chicken.
So maybe you cant give up meat altogether, but you could reduce down to chicken, then down to egg/dairy later on.
Diet isn’t a binary choice. There are lots of different options. You could also vary day to day. Maybe be a veggie on certain days of the week.
More important than any of that is how we vote. The government in power has a way bigger effect than any individuals dietary choice. FF/FG/SF are ALL useless in this regard. They are ALL pandering to farmers. So if you’re vegan and voting for one of them, then you’re voting against your own interests
Not a chance
I do already. Stopped eating cow and pig two years ago.
No
People make it sound a lot harder than it is. I have digestive issues and still have been able to live comfortably on a diet free of animal products entirely.
I mean we’re literally the only animals that drink milk after childhood, anything is possible
Done it already, no meat, it wasn’t agreeing with me.
I eat fish and veg.
Little bit of cheese.
No milk.
On the upside, I feel better and stronger.
Downside, BBQ’s just aren’t the same anymore.
Vegetarian for 22 years so….yes
Yep! Already veggie and trying to cut down on dairy where possible (Tesco wicked kitchen mint choc chip ice-cream is fab, you’d genuinely never know it’s got no dairy, but I need vegan milk chocolate to step its game up).
The entire world needs to drastically reduce their meat and dairy intake, not just us.
The Amazon rain forest disappears so that the land can be used to grow grains which feed livestock, incl. livestock reared here. Why aren’t we wise enough to know that we can just cut out the middle man.. err, cow/pig/chicken…
The word vegan has became a dirty word, unfortunately, but we should all strive for less animal products in our diet. If not for the planet, then for our own bodies.
It’ll be a great day when our farmers are allowed to openly grow hemp and other plant produce and make great profits, in a far easier way than raising livestock.
Nope, I love beef. Maybe stop celebs getting a private jet from one part of the country to the other. That’s what I’d be behind.
I cut out beef and dairy completely a few years back. I don’t miss it, I was never big on them anyway besides the odd burger. Dairy was harder, but again, I don’t miss it too much with all the alternatives out there.
Already have
To an extent. I already don’t eat a lot of meat, but a decent bit of it is wild (venison).
How about we start with the big corporations that cause like 90% of pollution, and then we can talk about eating less beef.
No.
A lot of people have been indoctrinated with the propaganda that our small individual actions and contributions will solve the problem. BP has spent millions on convincing you that your “carbon footprint” is your responsibility and only that will solve the climate change problem. They invented the term “carbon footprint” just to shift blame from them to you. At the same time, all of those huge corporations are looting and pillaging and burning the planet for their own profit.
Your small actions won’t stop clear cutting of huge pieces of ancient forests. Won’t stop seas getting acidic. Won’t stop fossil fuel industry from spewing shit into atmosphere. Won’t stop governments from building more coal power plants when it’s clear only nuclear power will save us.
Imagine 5 fire trucks just shooting water into your house, but you fell for propaganda that it’s your responsibility to take a teaspoon and start throwing the water out. Sure, you are removing some of the water, no doubt, but that will do fuck all unless you stop the fire trucks from spraying insane amounts of water into your house.
If I am to die in a post apocalyptic world, might as well do that while eating a nice steak.
I’ve cut down massively on my beef intake. I have it at most once a month now but being completely honest that was only for my own benefit cutting down on red meat.
I’m happy enough with my consumption of dairy and other meat and have no plans of reducing it.
How about we tackle the 10 companies in the world that are responsible for 70% of global carbon emissions?
No … I would rather electricity and transportation systems work towards renewable .. stop with this attack the meat industry farce
Fuck off is the answer. If you want to reduce emissions how about going after the corporations and not the people?
I went pescatarian in January and shortly after switched to oat milk and cut way back on cheese. Mainly for the environment as well as health. I think it’s easy when you can cook and also there are some far better substitutes than there were 5 years ago.
Or just take fewer leisure flights. A burger is ~5kg of carbon and a roundtrip flight to london is ~1,000kg which means a very short flight is equal to 200 burgers. You can obviously do both, but I think its nice to keep the scale of these things in mind.

p.s. I spent literally 3 minutes googling the figures but you get the point even if they are off by a bit.
I feel this is just like recycling in the 90s and “carbon footprint” in the early 2000s. False parameters for solving a problem we don’t cause or perpetuate.
Lets stop Coca Cola and other huge companies from producing massive waste (like 250,000 bottles a minute), bring and end to boat cruising holidays and cut down air travel as much as possible.
And then sure lets try to keep beef production local. I see how cows are treated by small farmers in my locality and they live amazing lives. Recently an organic drive through opened up in Carrick on Shannon and it really is the future. Kick out Mcdonalds, KFC, Burger King and SuperMacs because not only is there treatment of animals questionable at best but more importantly THEY DON’T CARE ABOUT YOUR HEALTH OR THE HEALTH OF YOUR CHILDREN. They poison us for a profit.
