Any car mechanics?

  1. Info
I drive a 1L petrol VW up. I also have a box so I drive under speed limits and keep revs low. Got a major fail NCT. The man said he’s never seen emissions so high. I have no idea what’s happened as it’s a tiny car? Will it be expensive to fix? Cheers

  2. Your universe has gone sideways, don’t think a car mechanic is going to be able to help.

  3. Whatever about the emissions, how did you not notice the side lights not working? They’re an easy fix at least. The dirty engine may be less so.

  4. Jesus christ, check your bulbs before going for a test, it takes 2 minutes and would have been a rediculious thing to fail on if the emissions hadn’t also failed.

As for the emissions, try some Diptane or Radex in the petrol and give it some beans every once and a while. Cars don’t like being kept below 3 thousand revs all the time. If that doesn’t work, it could also be lambda sensors or the catalytic converter or several other things. It’s best to consult someone who can actually look over the car as there might be some clues as to what’s causing it.

  5. I’m no mechanic or scientist, but I’m pretty sure that if you’d just fix your damn car, all of our farmers would be able to keep all their cattle.

  6. With emissions being so high there’s a good chance you may have a hole in the exhaust. Does your engine burn oil?

I would suggest checking the air filter, this can impact on emissions.

Have you noticed your car become noisier recently?

  7. When was it last serviced. Get it serviced or at least an oil change and fuel and air filter. The follow the advice you were given and drive it like you stole it fir a while. You want to get the exhaust hot to clean out the catalic converter. P

Mt guess is air filter or bad fuel.

  8. The car is running rich and probably has been for a while which damaged the catalytic converter.

Could be one of many sensors: o2, MAP, coolant temp, fuel pressure regulator etc. Once that’s fixed you’ll need a new catalytic converter.
