  1. But something about they should be lucky they have a job because they earn more than I do, or something /s

I’m with every person fighting for better working conditions.

Good luck to the strikers, hope you get what you deserve. Good luck to the public trying to get around, I hope you manage to plan alternatives without too much hassle and please be kind to each other.

  2. >Steve Montgomery, managing director of rail operator First Rail and chair of the industry-wide Rail Delivery Group, said operators would give bigger pay rises only if train drivers agreed to changes in working practices that would save money.

**”We’re not saying to people ‘work longer hours’, but to be more productive within the hours they currently have,”** he said.

What is the salary of Steve Montgomery?

  3. Nothing says Britain Britain like a good old fashioned Railway strike that comes and goes, causes havoc, costs way more in a few hours than what it would have to agree to their demands in the first place.

This varies between different operators, as it’s all part of the negotiations at company level, but for a bit of context:

We’re entitled to a single 40 minute break in a turn of duty that can be up to 10.5 hours in length. That reduces to a single 25 minute break for a maximum turn length of 9.5 hours, a single 15 minute break for a maximum turn length of 7.5 hours.

We can work for up to six hours without a break, which can include up to 5.25 hours of “continuous driving”.

We have a fixed base roster, but our booked work can be cancelled at relatively short notice and we can be moved up to 2.5hrs either way from our booked start time. There’s spare turns on top of that, where we don’t know what we’re doing until 48 hours prior.

We can be compelled to work up to an hour’s overtime, although in reality this can be much longer if things go badly wrong, because what can you do about it if you’re stuck in the middle of nowhere, or at a station halfway across the network?

I don’t know how much more they hope to squeeze from us.

I wonder whether walking time will be back in the spotlight, so that we can explore options to teleport to and from our minimal breaks instead!
