Seen in Belfast. People could really do with more of these on steps, escalators and the like. Jervis in Dublin is terrible with people standing wherever they like on escalators and blocking it for anyone moving up.

  1. I mean you may have seen it in Belfast but obviously from living near it, people take no heed nor care of it.

  2. That’s a stairs though so presumably you keep left going up to leave the other side for the people coming down?

  3. After living in Australia for a decade I find it really irritating in escalators here that people don’t stick to the left.

  4. People are so strict on this sort of thing in the UK, and other rules for high density living, whilst Ireland is much more relaxed. I take its from generations of urban living in British cities, whereas Ireland’s urban population is mostly relatively new.

  5. People need to take the Cadbury Caramel Bunny’s advice and relax.

What’s so important on the top floor of Jervis that you need to rush? Auntie Anne’s pretzels can wait.

  6. The one thing (and only one thing) I miss from the Covid era is the one way systems and people/ traffic flow. Worked so much better.

  7. Maybe not escalators. Before you know it we will have people running down one side because they can’t wait another 2 minutes for the next Metro.

Oh yeah. Did I say 2 minutes, I meant 2 decades.

  8. All over the UK is like this. Walk on left, stand on right. They get very huffy and puffy if you stand on the left.

I mean, they won’t say anything but they let out a few tuts and eyerolls.

  9. The Swiss are amazing for this sort of thing.

Walking through the (enormous) Bern train station you are struck by how there’s basically a traffic lane and an overtaking lane for foot traffic. You can walk at a speed close to running if you choose. *And it’s incredibly crowded.* They’re just disciplined.

  10. If only there were some widely recognised colours for left and right. Oh cool, green and red? Yeah, stick them wherever.

  11. And no stopping at the top of the stairs either! What you need there is a trap door so anybody who stalls at the top of the stairs falls into it.

  12. Why do the people coming down the stairs not also need to be constantly reminded by signage to stay on the left?

Its discrimination against stairclimbers, I tell ya.

  13. Go to any major European country and they follow the driving side rules on stairs and escalators etc. I’m convinced us Irish people are just less evolved

  14. The ‘travelator’ things at Dublin airport drive me mad. Just because its moving doesn’t mean you have to stop walking and block it.

  15. Let’s do “please stay right” instead so it’s closer to European standard, also holding the railing with the right hand is safer.

  16. We should do what horsey people do. There’s a ‘pass on the left side’ guideline so that when two horsey people are on horseback, facing a horsey head on collision, both people pull to the left to pass each other.

I’d love to adopt that for people people. You know ‘the stranger dance’, when two people are on course to walk into each other and both of ye move but unfortunately ye both moved to contrasting side so still on course to collide – just a few inches off the original path? Be great if it was widely acknowledged ‘I’ll just skip a bit to the left’. If both people do this there’ll be no walking into each other.

  17. During covid Jervis and the Ilac both had one way systems but one had people walk on the left and the other on the right. So people crossing from one shopping center to the other just ignored both.

  18. “I’ve got a great idea to tell people the right side to walk on! Now they’ll have no excuse to not get it right.”

    “Which side?”

    “The left.”

  19. 100% with you on this OP. It’s not just the Jervis though, it’s everywhere and if you look at the stickers at the bottom on every escalator it has a sticker with two people with a big X indicating not to stand beside each other and a sticker with one person standing on the right indicating the correct way to use the escalator.

It’s really annoying if your in a rush and someone is just standing in front of you blocking the way oblivious to anyone else on the escalator. Stand on the right and walk on the left which is the same in the U.S., U.K. etc…

  20. Every country in the world does this. The Irish are the only people that don’t seem to have escalator etiquette. It’s not your fault, it’s just weirdly not apart of your culture. One of my pet peeves when moving here.

In any airport in the world, in any country, you can always spot the Irish. They’ll be standing on the wrong side chatting to a mate blocking the entire escalator oblivious that everyone else is standing to one side.
    .

  21. As a fast walker, yes, please get the fuck out of my way, I would like to ascend stairs and not take five minutes in doing so.
