North East addict says betting is ‘legal crack cocaine’ in region home to most at risk gamblers

  1. It is actually insane to me that gambling is legal in this country and not only legal, on every high street, in every tv ad break, on every websote ad spot and available on every device.

I am not saying gambling should be totally banned but it shouldn’t be everywhere you look, take if off tv, close the highstreet bookies and stop gambling apps and websotes from working on mobile devices.

  2. I used to work at a bookies until recently. Genuinely the amount of safer gambling stuff that is in place now is actually incredible. My old
manager said 20 years ago you just took every bet no matter what the state the gambler was in. Now it is a hell of a lot different, any bet over a certain amount you have to check they are comfortable, you can ask them to prove they can afford it/what their income is, set your own limit, you are encouraged to refuse it over a certain amount too, tons of limits on all types of gambling. Also you can ask to be excluded from every bookmakers, casino and every form of gambling (except stuff like the lottery) in the country, so no one will take your bets or allow you to have an account on their online platforms.

  3. Its not just traditional gambling any more either, its grown in prevalence in gaming in recent years and is quite simply predatory/out of control at this point, not enough being done presumably because they’ve greased the right palms to ignore the fact we’re breeding the next generation of gambling addicts under our nose

At the very least you’d expect an approach where the firms get taxed out the arse to help cover the cost of treating those suffering gambling addiction

  4. It’s a predatory industry… It’s all designed to go against your biology. It’s exploitative. They will argue it gives the opportunity for entertainment based on wilful engagement for participation however that excludes that people are human beings that are susceptible to temptation to the point it is detrimental to their very wellbeing.

There’s rules about serving a heavily drunk individual, you can’t or lose your licence. However these gambling sites can take all your finances and tempt you back and get however there’s no restrictions or limitations on their part. It’s utterly disgusting and exploitative.

  5. My dad once told me one of the saddest things he’d seen was a bloke sat absolutely crying his eyes out outside the bookies in the morning.

I genuinely don’t understand why it’s advertised the way that it is, you’re not allowed to advertise cigarettes anymore and you wouldn’t see adverts telling everyone how fun and easy self harm is and yet gambling adverts are absolutely impossible to escape.

  6. Yeah I can barely have a scratch card without feeling the need to buy more after I lose, and that’s my cut off point as I had a strong addiction to gambling when I was younger, I can’t imagine people who frequent bookies and gambling arcades how much they must lose.

  7. I like a gamble and can see how easy it is for people to lose everything. I am lucky. I went through a time after a few decent wins of pretty much loosing a lot more than I won. I decided to ban myself from everything online and now only go in to the bookies every once in a blue moon with about 30 quid on me. Once that is gone I’m out. Some people are not as lucky to break the cycle and a lot more needs to be done.

Also even though the slots etc are supposed to be regulated to be fair, that is a total load of rubbish. I have seen the RTP on slots with my own eyes been put in the bookies favour even more. If a game says 96% RTP it’s most likely 40%. Even with UK registered sites that do blackjack I have seen some dodgy shit. It’s not fair on the player at all and is even more balanced in the bookies favour than what is supposed to be allowed. Some don’t even try to hide it. For example the company that owns virgin games, jackpot joy and quite a few others always have the same user names winning the big money on bingo.

My advice is just save your money.
