Healy Rae says horse racing next on ‘slippery slope’ if coursing banned

  1. There’s a difference between killing animals for fun and killing them for food this isn’t a slippery slope at all, I hope it gets banned

  2. Did Myxomatosis not spread like wildfire during covid when there was no coursing, no hares being caught and dosed for diseases so when it actually came back they were scarce.

  3. “Where do you draw the line…” is always the argument of a fucking idiot who is trying to debate a hypothetical future situation rather than the one actually being discussed.

  4. Is there literally nothing else they can find enjoyable on this planet besides torturing animals… says a lot about Healy Rae tbh

Find a new hobby what’s the big deal? Tradition is never something to justify continued practice, plenty of “traditional” aspects of society now frowned upon

  5. Splitting hairs I know, but I’d love to know where that picture is from. All Irish coursing tracks require a muzzle on the dogs

  6. I don’t know why I’m opening myself up for this, but coursing isn’t just dogs attacking hares for sport. Clonmel is the biggest coursing event in the country and they have heaps of rules related to the welfare of the hare. They are all checked out by vets and released after some set number of runs after.

In events like that the winning dog is the one that turns the hare, so if the dog in the right is faster, the hare will bolt to the left.

I’m not defending it, it should be banned. And Healy Rae is a bullshitter who likes being in the papers.

  7. Reckon many people would vote for Healy-Rae if he ran for the Aras? I reckon there are a fair few gombeens out there that would be happy to do his bidding and canvas for the man.

  8. I don’t understand the slippery slop. One’s a bloodsport and the other isn’t? I know there’s concerns about cruelty in racing but it’s not the same debate.

  9. If we’re being honest here horse racing should be banned as well. It’s animal cruelty in the same way hare coursing and greyhound racing is.

  10. Ireland has a massive coursing tradition. My great great grandfather was involved training and breeding Master McGrath. There’s a song about him. Long may coursing last.

  11. Next thing they’ll be banning children being able to crawl under the machines in the textile mills to clear snare ups.

What are we going to do then? The economy will grind to a halt!

  12. Oh good, another thread full of morons who know nothing about horse racing and are repulsed by gambling (who probably also play the lotto all the time).

Racehorses in Ireland receive an exceptionally high standard of care, among the highest in the world. In fact they probably live a better life than most redditors.

Irish horses- not just racehorses but horses in general- are renowned globally for their quality. We produce about half of all thoroughbreds in the EU. The horse racing industry has a long history in Ireland and regardless of whatever you personally think of it, it’s culturally important as well.

It also generates a net profit of about a billion euros to the exchequer every year, so it’s misleading to say it’s “taxpayer funded”.

I think the reason why so many people here are ignorant of the high safety and welfare standards of Irish horse racing is because they think horse racing is the same globally. I don’t doubt in countries like South Africa, Australia or the US that horse racing is much less regulated than in Ireland and probably *is* cruel. That I think is where the misconception comes from- people read horror stories about something awful happening in the Melbourne Cup or the Kentucky Derby and so they think that also happens in Ireland.

Finally, what is up with all this nanny state bollocks about wanting to ban gambling? What is it with this sub and wanting everything even remotely fun to be banned, shut down or unbearably regulated?

  13. Would be great if we could invest the 88 million a year of tax payer money that goes into these activities into like housing or like human sports….something that actually benefitted the tax payers.

  14. this from the two Healy Rae dickheads that wanted to give permets to alow people to drink drive.
