‘Our theme is relentless love’: England to open first secure school for young offenders | Young people | The Guardian

  1. This seems like a genuinely good idea that will hopefully demonstrate that a new model for the treatment of young offenders is possible and achievable. Rehabilitation must be the aim, especially for young people. Teaching them that they have value in life and providing them with an alternative perspective will help to reduce reoffending risks.

  2. I was going to post this, but didn’t feel like getting flamed by our new “hang em’ and flog em’” friends.

Knew this would either be a hippy thing or a religious thing

    >The school will be run by a “principal director”, Andrew Willetts, rather than a prison governor, and children will be cared for by teachers, not guards, said Chalke, who oversees 52 Oasis academies in England. “We don’t have young offenders. We have students. Just like we have bedrooms, and we are home. There’s none of that alienating language left,” he said.

Look, I get that more rehabilitative approaches have worked elsewhere, but this article comes across as hopeless religious naivety. They’ve said themselves that it’s for children convicted of serious crimes, so they’ll be dealing with the likes of Jon Venables, Harry Long etc. They’re not going to get anywhere if they don’t acknowledge and address the fact that some of the children they’re dealing with are just downright evil.

Still, if it works, it works, so I’ll hold my breath until we start seeing results.
