UK heatwave: Weather forecasters report unprecedented trolling

  1. Given that several newspapers ran headlines saying similar things, you don’t really have to look too far to find the cause.

  2. I really wish the mainstream media would look up what ‘trolling’ actually means one day. Because sending someone abuse or threats isn’t trolling. That’s abuse and threats

  3. Are People still really not grasping the difference between weather and climate?

Then you have full on morons with ~~conspiracy theories~~ absolute bullshit

  4. The article doesn’t seem to cite how many trolling tweets there were. I’d imagine weather presenters don’t have an overly active Twitter feed day to day (beyond people blaming them when it rains unexpectedly). ‘Unprecedented trolling’ could easily mean maybe a dozen messages. But by reporting it this way to millions, I’m sure it will soon become a whole Twitter war between daily mail readers and BBC readers.

  5. The heatwave was one of those times when I felt a bit sorry for the right wing nutters.

They somehow argued themselves into a corner where they had to try to pretend that it wasn’t hot on the hottest day ever.

At the point where they were getting on Twitter to call weather forecasters liars for saying that it was getting a bit warm, do you think they stopped to question how they’d ended up in such a stupid situation?

  6. I have some friends who are cc deniers …. but then again they are also flat earthers and covid deniers too. Visiting is always fun and lively 🙂

  7. “Absolute scaremongering. Heatwave was created Sunday night by aircraft
dispersing substances that blocked the sun and created a heat dome to trap heat within it in order to give off a greenhouse effect so gov can use these statistics to justify their climate change agenda.”

Oh wow. The chem trail loons made it to the UK. I was hoping that kind of stupid would stay in America.

  8. Well done to the BBC for giving a platform for “it was a man-made heat dome created by aeroplanes” stupidity. I hadn’t heard that particular load of nonsense, but now have thanks to its inclusion in the article – the “misleading” marker for the image doesn’t offset making it available to a wider audience.

  9. Theres a class of people who simultaneously believe nothing is wrong but also – everything is wrong.

  10. What kind of moron sends abusive tweets to a weather forecaster about the weather.

If you have that much free time and you are that disappointed in your life then perhaps you should spend that free time doing something about your shitty existence.

  11. This is a classic case of people not wanting to hear what the truth is so they get angry as it causes them such cognitive dissonance. I remember before the heatwave the met forecasters were being very cautious saying it was just a possibility of 40 plus temps and even then people were saying it was fearmongering and sensationalist, then it occurred.

  12. This is both awful and stupid, awful because this is abuse towards meteorologists and stupid because the abuse is the equivalent of shooting the messenger.

What’s in it for those dishing out the abuse exactly? Being an awful human being towards a weather forecaster won’t change reality – it’s not even that difficult to measure and it’s quite staggering when you calculate how much energy is involved.

The amount of energy involved is why there’s major concern around global air temperatures increasing by even 1°C, to increase the temperature of 1 cubic metre of air takes 16,800 joules, as there’s about 5.15×10^(18) kg of air in the atmosphere which is roughly 4.29×10^(18) cubic metres of air (this is based upon a density of 1.2 Kg/m^(3), which isn’t true for the whole of the atmosphere, so this figure is very inaccurate), it would take roughly 7.21×10^(22) joules of energy to raise global air temperatures by 1°C (again inaccurate, but at this point a more accurate figure would still be into the 70,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 area).

What I’ve written above is wildly inaccurate and made with a lot of assumptions, but it’s based on actual observations of reality and is a fair bit more substantial than say: “Heatwave was created Sunday night by aircraft dispersing substances that blocked the sun and created a heat dome to heat within it” – which was in the BBC article as an example of trolling (this example might actually be trolling and not abuse of weather forecasters, because it’s a very ridiculous statement).

The fact that anyone denies the climate crisis at all is also terrible, the change of climate due to human activity has been widely recognised in scientific papers for decades and at this point anyone who’s denying this is either ignorant or is making money at the expense of the planet (and presumably our future survival).

It’s quite amusing when you know how contentious scientists can be that there’s widespread agreement on modern climate issues. There’s been whole careers made on disproving one another, so when their work and modelling consistently shows the human impact on the global climate it makes for very stark reading.

  13. Proof, if any is needed, that there are a lot of dumb people about, and they mostly seem to vote Tory, or Ulster Unionist if in Northern Ireland. Same thing.

  14. This is news? Internet allows idiots to have their say. We’ve been seeing this for over a decade now, it’s getting old. Just ignore them and when they realise they’re shouting into the void they’ll lose the motivation.

An actual news article about it is ludicrous. Might as well make an article about every other reddit thread.

    Absolute nonsense.

  15. I thought UK experiencing a heatwave might help climate change deniers to open their eyes to the reality. But maybe not. It was too short lived for them to feel the impact like other countries.

What I don’t understand is, why do they attack the people who are concerned or worried? It’s fine if they just ignore and bury their head in the sand. But why do they need to attack/ridicule/whatever the people who wants to talk about or do something about it?

It feels like they know in their heart that it’s happening, but just don’t want to believe because it’s too scary. I do think these people are just cowards really, opposite of the image they are trying to portray themselves.

  16. Imagine being so angry and unable to listen to any reasonable arguments that climate change is happening that you feel the need to email metrological science centres and weather people abuse.

Love the chemtrails conspiracy theory is being banded about again.

    The state of this country.

  17. It never got past 32C where I was. I guess the weather reporting is more accurate for London and surrounding areas than it is for the deprived places. We must overthrow the government and replace it with nothing, let Darwinian principles take effect and we’ll evolve lizard-blood for the hot times. Some of us have to be the sensible serious ones!

  18. Everyones a CO2 warrior until the bill comes in.

    Russia to blame?….no “Capitalism”..

  19. It should be no surprise to anyone paying attention that the same people who are Anti-Woke, who believe COVID was a global elitist conspiracy, and who deny climate change are the same people who think Russia was provoked into invading Ukraine and the same people who are pro Trump.

It’s been 10 years of carefully planned foreign interference in our society, but I’d hope that at least some people are starting to realise this.

  20. Regardless of use of the word “trolling”, why though? Do people think that they summon the heat like some sort of thermomancer?

  21. This is what happens when someone who doesnt use the internet reports on the internet.

    Come on Merlyn.

This isn’t trolling. This is abuse.

  22. What the fuck is wrong with these lunatics. Is their world view so fucking fragile that the truth is such a threat to them?

  23. Fair play to BBC for calling these people out and providing evidence that their ‘back in my day’ claims are completely made up.

  24. I find it utterly bizarre the way people will take storm or flood warning seriously, but not severe heat. The kind of heat we had the other week can kill the unprepared.

  25. I happened to have been away during the heatwave. I was baffled about the 70s being mentioned. It’s amusing to learn that it’s not even in the top 10!
