It’s literally not gonna stop until we rise up is it.
Insane the government has to actually step in! so many people wont be afford to live
Did anyone hear Boris earlier today “its inevitable” he said. Wow!
5 Bedroom house my energy bill in the Netherlands just got cut from 230 euro to 132 Euro P/M thanks to vat cuts and my solar panels.
Guys, you have to take action this government will not stop an fuck you, they will put their fists so wide up your ass they tickle your uvula. it’s not conservative versus labor anymore this is the 1% vs all others.
They know we will keep paying and are basically stuck as all energy suppliers raise prices. They will just take us for a ride in the meantime.
Look, I don’t consider myself left wing but having things that can literally affect people lives this much being privately owned just seemed fundamentally undemocratic. Essential services, utilities and travel should be publicly owned.
I’d pass emergency legislation taking the money away from Shell, BP etc and using it to offset energy bills until the price returns to something manageable for average household.
I’d also criminalise any attempts to funnel profits away or hide them with inflated “costs”, making sure the board of directors know they will be imprisoned.
I wouldn’t give a shit if the market reacted badly, it’s the right thing to help the people.
lets talk about price for the Kwh… so that we can understand where we stand…
I’m generally not one for causing a fuss, but fuck me, the few are screwing the many far too hard here. I would absolutely support mass protest on this.
It would be easy to say ‘the government’ are letting it happen, but we’re well beyond that now (it’s the Conservatives – of course they are. We know them well enough). This is on *us.*
Thank god we have a party that isn’t actively working against the British public to spread poverty and maximise corporate profit. Then we’d really be fucked.
I’ve been saying for ages they’re rising the prices for the hell of it and using the Russia war as an excuse.
The energy market needs to be reformed so that global wholesale gas prices don’t completely dictate energy costs. Renewables account for about 40% of UK electricity generation and are much cheaper per unit, but yet the cost savings don’t get passed onto the end consumer.
> Shell posted record earnings of $11.4bn (nearly £10bn) for the three-month period from April to June and **promised to give shareholders payouts worth £6.5bn.**
> Asked about the stark contrast with punishingly high bills faced by households already struggling amid sky-high inflation, **Shell’s chief executive**, Ben van Beurden, **said the company could not “perform miracles” to bring oil and gas prices down, adding: “It is what it is.”**
United Kingdom Subreddit = Constant news articles on how we are fucked.
What people are fundamentally getting wrong is that most of the profits here aren’t being made by domestic British companies. You can’t tax Saudi Arabia or Russia’s extra oil and gas revenue or private profits by firms outside of the UK who’re selling electricity and energy to the UK. So while you can consider windfall profit taxes on Shell and BP it won’t be THAT material -> besides these cos have to pay due taxes in their local governments and subsidiaries and pay UK taxes on UK income which is pretty minimal in a global context.
Sad to say this, but gas and electricity are a necessity and this is what happens when these such things are privatised. A company will try to do everything they legally (and sometimes otherwise) can to make a profit. Gas and electricity should be nationalised. Look at EDF. They are currently a private company but the French government owned a big stake. In France gas prices have been frozen and electricity capped at 4%. They ‘forced’ EDF to do this and have subsequently announced they are going to the back complete ownership. This is the way, the only way to take back control.
What does OFGEM actually do? Labour wants to regulate, but the current regulators don’t fucking work.
Join Don’t Pay UK! It’s a movement fighting these price hikes with civil disobedience. They have plans for October and currently need numbers

If your under 35 and have reasonable skills and 5k in the bank just leave. That’s my plan. I came back in January, saw this country was as bad as I left it, sold most my stuff, gave the rest to charity and now am preparing to exit again. It’s expensive everywhere right now but I’d least like to waste the last year of my 20s and early 30s seeing the world a bit more than waiting for the mortgage I’ll afford and to slowly eat into those savings paying my bills.
I predict there will be more major intervention on energy bills from the next PM. It’s political suicide not to do so.
I also predict that the NI increase will be binned off as well regardless if it’s Truss or Sunak. Rising taxes during the worst cost of living crisis since WW2 is just stupid. Rishi is digging his heels in on that because it’s his tax rise and a U turn makes him look bad but come autumn time and if he is PM he will have no choice but to reverse it.
I love being bent over and financially f*cked by EDF.
Yeah, f*cking put me into poverty you naughty capitalist f*cks.
I don’t want to make this generational, but… Every baby boomer I speak to just wants to ‘stiff upper lip’ this and maintain the Conservatives know what they’re doing.
I’m sorry… I can’t take it anymore and it’s driving a wedge between my family and I. Their Thatcherite bullshit was fine in the 70’s but it’s fucking nonsense now with so many crises on our doorstep, a completely different set of circumstances, and the fact they’re happy to just peddle the line the media and the government wants them to peddle and make future generations suffer for their political apathy.
I was born in ’87 – I’m 35. I’ve just had a child, and I’m seriously considering emigrating because this shit is just bonkers. They get us to vote brexit and now systematically take away all rights and any chance of becoming anything other than a Victorian slave wage worker. Nah… Where do I sign up for protests on it all?
If my energy company tries to charge me £500 for electric i’m technically paying by key or gas that is also key i’ll tell them if they want it they better fucking earn it.
I’m lucky if i can pay £40 a month i sure as fuck can’t pay 500 a month not unless i turn to crime.
its amazing that companies can make record profits at the same time as being ‘forced’ to raise our bills
Can’t believe we put up with this sh*t. We should be burning Westminster down with what they are doing.
The gov keeps on giving us discounts using public money, while taking no action on the record profits of energy companies. We are just borrowing from the future us to keep this companies well fed.
It’s really sinking in that these people do not care for others at all. They could still be rich and more than comfortable with a fraction of this wealth, but they’re still pushing for more and more profit whilst everyone else suffers. It’s so sad to see in this world
