Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer says he sacked minister for making up policy ‘on the hoof’ at picket line

  1. And I believe he made that up on the hoof.

Least he’s come out and said pay should rise in line with inflation but then he ruined it with “but that’s for unions and companies to work out” fucking spine like a wet noodle.

  2. The Labour front bench will need message discipline and to adhere to collective responsibility if they’re going to ever win a GE, let alone be in government.

If you disagree with policy that much, resign from the shadow cabinet.

  3. my issue isn’t the sacking, it’s that Keir doesn’t support the strikes. He will alienate a large part of Labour voters. I am seriously considering who else to vote for next election.

Edit: I do care about getting rid of the Tories but it doesn’t mean my vote automatically goes to Labour. We have the chance to have a new party in power with enough momentum given the crap fest that has gone on.

2nd edit: for those that say it will never happen, not with that attitude it won’t! It’s exactly what the Tories want, to not have any opposition that puts UK citizens first. If Keir came out and said that the government’s stance was inexcusable and supported the strikes like some of his MPs do then I would have confidence in him. Zara should be in his role at this stage.

  4. I agree wirh Starmer as a leader of an organisation bur he has to give Labour members something to work with, even if they have to keep their mouth shut, not having a direction makes for idle thoughrs and follish actions.

  5. Unfortunately Starmer is in a bind. Hypocritical as all politicians are there is simply no way Starmer can be seen to support the unions 100pc on ‘above inflation payrises’. Because if/when the conservatives collapse and Labour win a GE he would then have to get the cheque book out and dole out all the cash!

  6. He’s going for the Blair-like iron grip on Comms

Alas he doesn’t have an Alastair Campbell, nor is he a rude boy like Tony

  7. For everyone supporting this, I have 2 questions:

    1. Do you also condemn Rachel Reeves making up policy “on the hoof”?

    2. Why are you so against organised labour?

  8. The BBC did a hatchet job of reporting this and so many people fell for it on Reddit, especially the far left.

Yes Starmer should be supporting the workers, its the very job of Labour. But he didn’t sack the guy for this. You can’t have MPs just making up bullshit policies at unauthorised media events.

  9. You would have to be seriously naive to believe this. He doesn’t hold those on the right of the party to this standard. In fact Starmer did this himself when he announced that Labour would campaign for a second referendum some months prior to the election.

  10. When the right are as bad as they are, it takes a specific concrete effort to make the general public decide that the left is probably even worse. Yet here we are.

  11. Come on, surely Starmer would have considered the optics of it. Regardless of what his real reason was everyone is going to think Tarry was sacked for joining the picket line, not this. He should have forgiven it.

And I’m saying this as someone who has no love lost for the Corbynistas or the Socialist Campaign Group.

  12. Good on him. Labour are not going to get elected by appearing to be a campaigning party. They need to appear to be a govt in waiting.

  13. An element I’ve seen 0 people discussing on reddit is that Sam Tarry getting sacked is *very* politically good for one person – Sam Tarry.

He’s currently on a deselection trigger because he only got in the first time as his closest competition had a (now proven false) sexual harassment claim made against them in the days leading up to the vote, and then he managed to piss off his most ardent supporters, the hard left part of Ilford North CLP, because he joined Starmer’s cabinet.

Getting sacked was the only way Tarry has a chance of keeping his seat. I’m not saying getting sacked was his intention all along, but it’s incredibly politically expedient for him.

  14. The rules are very clear but this wouldn’t have happened if Keir had not went against what labour has been all about for over a century…

  15. He probably even believes this is the case. Otherwise, how could he live with himself for what he has done to the party representing the poorest and weakest of us.

Tell the same lie enough times and you’ll start believing it.

  16. To all those people who don’t believe this, engage with me in a thought experiment.

Everything else is the same. Everything else happened exactly as it did. The only difference is that the policy he made up, was that Labour would ban abortions. In that situation, do you believe he was fired for making up policy?

If so, then you agree that he should be fired for what he did. If so, you agree Starmer did the right thing.

  17. Maybe the labour party should already be supporting the bloody unions instead of doing a shit job at roleplaying as Tories which alienates their own voters and does nothing to win over Tories.

  18. Media is running this all day feel like the beginning of the smear campaign, how long till he’s “unelectable” like corbyn.
