When we were kids, we did eat but blueberries are sweeter and better.
We do, but bilberries are so much better that we rather eat them
Taste is quite mild, or somewhat blank and missing sweetness of mustikka (=bilberry). I’ve heard you can use them among other berries if you make juice with the steam kettle (=mehumaija, no idea what is the name in English) and the end result is good.
The forest next door to us is full of big juolukka whereas mustikka are much smaller so we picked of course whatever we come across. We have picked several buckets of juolukka and made jams. It’s true that the taste is milder but it feels much nicer to pick such plum berries(compared to mustikka).
Hey nice catch! I eat them every day, winter or summer, frozen or fresh, but fresh is better. Did you know that you are not supposed to pick leafs?
Because the taste and texture are inferior to “normal” blueberries, or well, bilberries.
We do.
Juolukka is perfect for making a pie! It is better than mustikkapie in my opinion! When consumed raw blueberry is better!
We need Thai people to collect them for us.. Lazy asses.
Some years they taste really good but most years they just taste mediocre. Also they don’t last long so you have to pick them at right moment.
Bilberries are very similar, sweeter and not so seasonal to pick. So they are preferred.

That said I’ve had great juolukka couple of times in my life.
They aren’t very tasty.
You should collect them. As someone already mentioned mix them with bilberry.
The taste is not as sweet as bilberry. But i if i remember right, the nutritional value is actually bit superior. Go figure..
