But seriously, I don’t understand why these Unionist politicians in the North think that they are “like us”. I feel I have far,far more in common with the majority of Irish people in the South than with these bigotted, dinosaur denying people who don’t seem to be able to see any form of modern world and are stuck in their provocative rituals of marches and bonfires.
Most English people are not sectarian, for most of us “the Troubles” are a long time ago – the younger generation are post Good Friday agreement. To us, ireland has changed dramatically over the last decades and it is probably just some of the older boomers who still see it still as an agricultural, ultra conservative, heavily Catholic society (in terms of Church having a big influence). The DUP is frankly an embarressment to most of us in it’s backwardness while pretending to be British while in many ways rejecting any sort of “modern British” values.
