Good man. I deleted shitbook last year and it’s honestly one of the best decisions I’ve ever made
Facebook is what you use it for.
I think it’s great to keep in contact with people that I’d have lost touch with years ago without it.
Also great to see how badly your friends are aging and see what headers you use to know actually believe and say out loud.
Nothing better than have someone who works the tills in Lidl try their hand at international politics and post about how america is taken over by paedophile vampires and trump is still president.
And you’re like “Sean, it’s 4am, you live in Scrogganstown, go to bed or you’ll be late for your shift. The special on whitewater rafting is in the middle isle this week”
It’s rather entertaining.
It’s quite simple… You have an un friend button. You don’t need people with the same iq equivalent to their shoesize in your life!
I no longer use it, but I didn’t delete it as I use messenger to keep in touch with my parents, they’re elderly and the idea of learning to use another app doesn’t appeal to them. I thought Facebook was a lot of fun early days, but over time it became shit.
Both Facebook and Twitter have algorithms that increase engagement through outrage, that’s a shitty way to treat folk, fuck them both. The fact that many people that work at these companies don’t allow their children to use them tells you all you need to know.
I would add however, if you want a space where idiots don’t talk as though they’re scientific experts, or political masterminds, reddit is an odd choice.
18 months gone – it’s a bigger cesspit than Benidorm…
That’s the thing isn’t. I don’t mind dumb people, it’s not their fault they’re idiots. I mind idiots who aren’t aware of how stupid they are and therefore think they’re actually pretty smart.
I deleted it a while ago, came over here…on the bright side .my sarcasm is pin point now
Haven’t been a Facebook in about 5/6 years now, so liberating, now my addiction was creating a reddit account to shipost. Also my imgur is the same 😂
What’s much more frustrating is that it’s easy to find highly qualified people spouting misinformation. For example, one of the previous top execs in pfizer is an anti vaxxer, and he had a role in developing this vaccine.
It’s no wonder people are having trouble telling good information from bad information
Kudus to you 🍓
Ads. Ads everywhere. When they got rid of the real timeline so that they could show you companies posts that were vaguely connected to your friends it went to shit.
Most of my close friends left at the same time. The craic went with them. Then Facebook became the place where folks with self-esteem issues showed the world that they had perfect lives, relationships and families.
Facebook groups became toxic echo chambers for liars to believe in their own shite. Also, Facebooks privacy policy and history of protecting your information is dubious at best.
Used to be fun, especially when camera phones became widespread, many many albums of drunken escapades when nobody cared what was posted in more carefree times and friend requests from randomers you met in a hostel in Berlin.
Then became a place to post your engagement photo
Then your wedding photos
Then your baby pictures
Then your Ma joined
Now its just your Ma sharing conspiracy theories and the baby pictures from 2016 are of kids now in school.
Farewell facebook. You outlasted Bebo.
Did the same and deactI acted it. Best thing I done. The amount of time I wasted on it. It was a big step up from Bebo.
I deleted facebook 10 years ago after I realised that, outside family, I hadn’t had a irl conversation with the majority of people I was ”friends” with for a good 10 years.
No one since has asked me what my facebook is to connect with. It was not something that is necessary for your life.
I deleted my Twitter for the same reason. I’ve a PhD in military intervention and the amount of terrible takes I see on Ukraine these days is depressing. I can understand people being interested in currently pressing issues but there’s a big difference between that and insisting your hot take is the valid one which the experts somehow missed.
I had one Redditor insist that I was “larping” about my background when I debated their bizarre take on the Ukraine conflict.
I still have mine, mostly for finding old car parts and Birthday reminders. Can’t say I post on it much or upload photos anymore.
It was great back when it was just yer mates and some people ye met on yer travels.
Now it’s just adds, very little else. Looked at it one evening and counted 7 adds to 1 actual post. It’s outlived it’s usefulness as social media but serves another purpose now
I use Facebook to follow a small group of specific people. And occasionally I’ll prune that list.
I’ve a few (not all) friends and family, my gym, a couple of bands I play with. Same with Instagram. And Twitter.
And I’ll block a lot of stuff too. E.g. one friend retweets a lot of football stuff. I’m not into football so I block or mute the accounts he retweets so the retweets no longer appear in my feed. Similar on Facebook.
I’ve another friend who gets caught up in comments, and those posts appear on my feed. I don’t want to unfriend him, so I just silence him every 30 days or days.
**_I_** control what I see, not Facebook or Twitter or…
Even on here I regularly prune the subreddits I’m in.
Maybe I use social media differently to everyone else but I curate my page on FB and Twitter pretty well. On FB I’m part of a few work related groups and meme pages I haven’t posted in my own page in years. On twitter I follow people I know and like and block any head wreckers.
I’m 5 years clean and it was a great decision to leave . Stick with it 👍
Man when jordan peterson came back from fighting chaos dragons to speak in Ireland it was such an easy unfollow
All lads you’d expect to be watching him, even a girl too. Unfollowed all of them lol
The only reason I keep the thing is because I’m in a Sopranos shitposting group and it’s hilarious, but if that goes, I’ll can the thing for good
I enjoyed up to 2013 but then after the Lee Rigby murder a few English people I worked with started sharing really dodgy muslim bashing videos, very slick outrage troll stuff and that was the end of it for me. I switched my account name to an anonymous title just to keep in touch with some specific friends, but it’s still handy some niche interests, but it really is a friendship killer.
Mines gone since 2017. I stopped using the profile in about 2015, when most of my friends list did also as its was overtaken by the blue rinse brigade to share minion memes and religious posts, and only used messenger and realised the people I chatted to on messenger were people I chatted to on WhatsApp anyway, so deleted the whole thing. Have basically abandoned IG and twitter this year also. So reddit is all that’s left for me!
Do people here not believe in the vaccines?
I wish people better understood the scientific method. Everyone is welcome to partake in it but apply the same rigor as those you doubt.
I posted the same meme with the same title a few months ago and this guy has copied it word for word:
Ugh I’ve had this discussion with my boomer father. He thinks an easy to produce, cheap, safe and freely available herb extract is some kind of miracle cure that can help with everything from depression to cancer and will help people even if they are young/old/pregnant/asthmatic etc.
Yes dad, somehow the pharmaceutical companies putting billions of dollars into research in new medicines missed this one and didn’t turn it into a commercial product. And all the doctors and medical researchers in the world missed this, so it isn’t prescribed or general knowledge. But the people on Facebook have somehow figured out this secret miracle medicine, which I can buy at the local drug store.
But people on Facebook are raving about it, so I should check it out!
Alright, I’ve found three journals that mentioned this extract and two said it was inconclusive and one said it might show something but more research was needed to be sure. So I’m going to go Occam’s Razor here and say the reason the herb extract is safe for everyone to take is because it’s basically food and does nothing within the body. People make up stories to sell shit or gain internet points or because of placebo effect. When it comes to health and medicines, trust your doctor.
And then somehow I’m the stupid kid that doesn’t trust his elder’s knowledge? SMH
Why delete it. I look at fb maybe once every couple of months or when someone txt did you see yer wans fb post.
Mmm to be fair with the turn around on depression and Alzheimer’s in the last few weeks maybe no harm to be open minded. There have been people saying Alzheimer’s research wasn’t accurate for a while and they were labelled anti science. Even look at the turn around that’s happening with saturated fat. It was demonised for a long time and more recent research in 2020 (Journal of American College of Cardiology) suggests it may in fact be beneficial and that the original research showing it’s linked to heart disease, stroke may have been biased too….. and perhaps increase in sugars may be more appropriate to research. Scientific knowledge is always changing and being questioned. That’s a good thing in my eyes.
Facebook, Instagram, all social media has destroyed people’s minds and is the worst possible use of what could have been an incredibly beneficial use of technology
Good, remember to replace their WhatsApp messenger with something else too (I recommend Signal).
So brave.
Medical research doesn’t always produce infallible results. Like with anything, there can be outside influences, and researchers can often feel compelled to come to certain conclusions based on attracting funding, or simply for the sake of enhancing the egoes or reputation of those involved.
Just recently, a prominent research paper in the study of Alzheimer’s has come under scrutiny for fraud. This study, at the time, paved the way for billions in research – and all for nought, because the whole thing was junk. Just think of how much time and lives were wasted because some trash study sent the entire research field down some merry-path to nowhere.
And this isn’t even a one-off thing. Every research field is filled with junk studies. There is a replication crisis in the scientific field at the moment. Many studies – studies which have informed research for decades – cannot be replicated. The reasons for this, it’s anyone’s guess. It could be anything from incompetence, severe limitations, lack of understanding, or foul play.
People need to come to terms with the fact that Science is just an epistemology. There is plenty of room for corruption and the massaging of figures, for whatever reason.
Regardless, everyone here should realise that the buck ends with you. As super low-status as it is to ‘question the experts’, you should understand that if something goes wrong, you really are on your own. I’ve found myself speaking to people who have had their lives devastated by medications (and no, I’m not necesssarily referring to the vax) and the general consensus is: Doctors don’t want to fucking know. You may as well be invisible. Buyer beware, and all that.
That’s funny! Most of the worlds top scientists and doctors were deleted from most social media platforms between 2020-2021.
Most people born after Y2K don’t use it unless it’s to talk to their older siblings.
This picture is factually incorrect. There’s NO WAY someone sits at the laptop at home with pants on.
I use it basically for direct family only.
Occasionally I consider following local news.
But like yesterday, I checked in on it. “Oh, a news article about people passing their Citizenship test, what a wholesome feel good story.”
Then there are 50 comments all about how the Democrats advertise this sort of thing to cover up the MilLiOnS of illegals pouring in every day tonvote illegally.
Then I remeber why I don’t follow the local news pages and why part of me kind of wishes Putin would get on with his idiocy and end the world in a nuclear fireball.
Same havnt used facebook in months i refuse to use it due to the damage its doing and has done to society. Pitting people against each other to make money is pure evil.
Who still uses any form of social media unironically? 🤦♂️
oh I get all those ads on youtube there is no escape
What finally did it for me was my sisters posting anti-5G / anti-Wifi petitions.
They were “just asking questions” despite the fact the petition was a solid confirmation of their stance.
They publicly posted that I was wrong and didn’t know what I was talking about when I pointed out how absurd the claims were and not a single one had any sources or citations.
I’m a network engineer, they’re teachers who used to ring me up asking me how fix a formatting oopsie in Word.
Facebook convinced them they knew everything about wireless tech and protocols because Gemma found out out the truth and somehow Soros convinced me everything I knew about networks was wrong.
My wife and I did this early 2021 for this reason. Don’t miss it. All the pandemic lies, Jan 6 stuff, abortion pro-life propaganda…it’s just a terrible platform that needs to die
This meme was already posted here like a year ago.
Also, people here hugely exaggerate how much of a breeding ground Facebook is for conspiracy theories, that’s in the internet in general, including reddit. I wonder why it’s become popular to make Facebook a scapegoat
I can’t stand being on that site anymore 😂 It’s just a waste of brainpower.
*logs onto twitter*
I’ve never used it, is it really as bad as everyone claims?
That’s what they call a “cartoon.” They were around long before “memes” were invented.
I’m still on Facebook and I probably will be for the foreseeable because I like taking part in a few groups. I stay away from anything remotely political. I did follow a couple of Irish politics pages but the American/MAGA influence was so fucking disturbing that I unfollowed them. I don’t need that shit in my life.
They didn’t ‘miss’ it 🙄 ‘They’ want us to believe X but I’m far too clever to believe whatever Big Media tells me. I follow this guy on Twitter. He knows what’s really going on. You shouldn’t believe everything that you’re told, you know.
