Putin demands NATO guarantees not to expand eastward

  1. Russia has been *chasing* all these countries into the arms of NATO.

These countries were begging to join asap, but nato were reluctant for years, and made them go through a ton of hoops, of which they did.

Because the alternative was to be bullied around by Russia, of which they have plenty of experience with.

  2. I don’t get it. If Ukraine WANTS to join NATO, why does it matter what Russia/ Putin want. Isn’t any country free to choose alliances and unions by itself

  3. How else the last two authoritarian regimes should feel in a free Europe. Of course they are afraid. Afraid of loosing power and money they stole from their people. Afraid of receiving justice for poisening and killing people.

  4. What is a guarantee worth?

Will Russia abandon the tactic of moving people to an area, and when they are the majority claim it as Russian territory, if they “guarantee” they will not do it (again)

  5. Putin wants guarantees from the west because he knows that on civilisation level Russia has nothing to offer and every nation wants to be part of “Europe”.

  6. How about deoccupying Ukraine including Crimea first. Otherwise how does he think he is in a position to make a demands

  7. Real irony in that is that the NATO is not any kind of a threat to Russia. NATO treaties’ mutual defence clause explicitly only applies if a member state is attacked. In other words in defence, there is no clause which applies for offensive action. That would need to be agreed separately regardless at which point the question of the potential NATO membership is already meaningless.

Ergo the only reason for Russia to be afraid of NATO is if Russia is planning on invading it’s neighboring countries. In essence it hinders Russia from interfering with the sovereignty of other countries.

  8. NATO doesn’t ‘*expand*’. In fact countries who want to be in it must ask for that. Putin, being an old dictator, can’t understand how democracy works unfortunately. He’s into semi-stalin’s mindset going Brezhnev.

  9. Tough shit.

They’re sovereign nations, if they want to join NATO that’s a conversation between them and NATO. Russia does not get a say.

  10. Baltics knew exactly why they rush the NATO mebership. They would be in the same situation right now or worse they would be part of Russian federation by now.

  11. A legitimate security concern would be if NATO would mass 100 000 troops and mechanized battlegroups on the border and appear to be poised for invasion… kind of like what Russia is doing at the moment (or regularly does with its exercises near the border).

A country joining NATO is no threat to Russia, its just one less country they can bully around and threaten, which is the real issue from Kremlin’s perspective.

  12. „Why is the west threatening me with Nato? All I do is annex parts of my neighboutibg country, enable militias that shoot down passenger planes and destabilize the EU borders through my puppet in Minsk. I am the good guy here!“

  13. How is Putin not the world’s laugh stock like Trump was? It’s almost comical how stupid shit he says constantly.

  14. The guy who invaded Georgia and Ukraine can fuck off if he thinks that promise is happening.
