Catholic church’s proposed redesign of Notre Dame interior provokes outrage

  1. Plans to revamp the fire-ravaged cathedral with contemporary art and multilingual projections of Bible quotes have been compared to Disneyland.

  2. >Notre Dame “was not adapted to cope with large numbers of tourists”, which rose to 12 million before the cathedral was devastated by fire in 2019. Visitors “come for different reasons, most of them from non-Christian or post-Christian cultures”. So the chapels, some of which could be renamed after Asia, Africa and other themes, should display “multiple offerings” such as light projections of Bible quotes in foreign languages including Chinese. Drouin showed designs featuring a stained-glass window and a chapel wall covered in a contemporary abstract painting of clouds.

But people visit Notre Dame de Paris because of it’s historical value, if you made it into a modern(ish) church people would have no reasons to visit and people wouldn’t (Just like if you repainted the Sistine Chapel, nobody would visit it

  3. Sounds like they want to turn the Notre Dame into some sort of modernist, touristic commercial for Christianity, rather than an authentic church…. I understand the idea and where it comes from, but this idea missed the point of why the Notre Dame is so popular among tourists; *because* of its historic beauty.

  4. Fuck.

    No.

This is more than a church, it’s a European cultural landmark. You might as well stick a McDonalds in the Forbidden City or plaster English text over the Kaaba.

Repair it as it was. This belongs to all of us Europeans, don’t bastardise it. Visitors come to see our history, not some godawful modern hodge podge supposedly seeking to “include” them. I would rather it be left as a ruin than raped in this manner.

  5. Make the walls out of plastic, open a McDonalds inside for convenience, and have Iphone commercials on the ceiling to help with funding.

And put in a large sign saying its an equally Muslim and Buddhist building so they don’t feel discriminated.

Maybe have Jesus holding a torn up ballot while on the crucifix to symbolize Vladimir Putin stealing the American election from Hillary Clinton.

And replace the church bells with an electric buzzer.

  6. As far as the church is concerned, Notre Dame stopped being a place of worship or even just a cultural/architectural landmark long ago. It’s a tourist trap to them, plain and simple. And the more ‘modern’ you make it, the more tourists you get – in theory, at least. Wouldn’t surprise me if this came back to bite them in the ass with force if they actually pull through with it.

  7. Making cultural landmarks more inclusive is stupid. People visit other countries _to_ experience other cultures. I don’t go to Asia wanting to see gothic architecture or to Latin America to eat bratwurst mit sauerkraut.

  8. I want to believe the intention is good.>! (I don’t)!<

But this is not the point of Notre Dame. It’s about the monument not about promoting Catholicism. Paris is such a wonderful place, so full of culture and history that it would be a glaring abcess to have such an important structure so clearly turisty.

  9. How about we make it into a place of remembrance for Catholic crimes over the centuries? We could have a whole section dedicated to child abuse and the cover up of it. Another corner can illustrate the burning of women. And yet another can show the willful dumbing down of society, which was orchestrated by the church to make people more compliant.

It could be held up as a beacon of shame for all that Church’s sordid behavior.

  10. It’s all so tiresome. When will these people stop vandalising our shared heritage? What the absolute fuck is wrong with them?

  11. I have no words and just so angry… Why can’t people just keep things as they were ment to be and just appreciate the vision and the hard work of the people who built it in the first place…?
