Sheffield resident has been waiting 61 years for a council house

  1. If you’re a single male without any kids I doubt you’ll ever get a council house as there are always new applicants who are deemed in greater need. 61 years though.

  2. The UK needs to get its housing situation sorted. This is a pretty basic requirement for a civilization.

If we have to greatly limit immigration, so be it. If we need to start confiscating land, then so be it. Whatever needs to be done, housing comes first. Even the most primitive and ancient civilizations were able to provide housing to their people.

If you cannot provide housing to the population then you have failed as a society. Full stop.

  3. that’s odd, ‘cos when my mate was a student in 1985, students could apply and go to a block of notorious flats if they had the belly for it. So he maybe choosy.
Meadowhall I seem to recall it was called.

  4. It should be noted it says in the article that these aren’t necessarily people going from zero house to one house, it’s also people going from one house that doesn’t suit their needs to one house that does.

For example, the one where the lady has been on the list for 20 years is because the house she’s living in isn’t fit for purpose, but she still has **a** house.

    Also there’s this:

    >Coun Douglas Johnson, chair of the housing committee, said there were 20,848 people registered but of that less than half, 8,474, were actively bidding for available properties. He said 60 percent of registered applicants were “just accruing waiting time” and not necessarily in urgent need.

  5. I’m not British so can anyone explain me why don’t you guys jusr build taller buildings? I look at many places on Google Earth and I’ve noticed that most British (and Western Europe in general) don’t have residential towers in the suburbs. It’s just rowhouses. Won’t building like Tokyo or Singapore solve your housing issues?
