In case anyone just reads the headline, the £3,850 figure refers to January not October, and many in the industry think it’s a pessimistic figure from one analyst.
Are we just kinda accepting 600 quid rises every six months now ? Or what ?
Cos it’s taking the piss a bit.
Edit 3 months my maths it bad I’m on holiday ! Even worse.
Boris Johnson and the Tories in 2022 – “Only a liar or a fool would pretend that Brexit could have anything to do with fuel prices! We were obviously lying to you and prices have nothing at all to do with anything we say or do!”
Does there come a point where it’s cheaper to burn wood and coal for heat?
Hopefully a major increase in heat pumps etc. can be pulled from this total shit show.
This is ridiculous. I’m a civil servant. My other half works retail. We have no children. We can’t afford this.
Force companies to accept lower profits. It’s the only way.
How the hell am I supposed to save up for a heatpump, solar panels, battery and EV car (with charger) while gas prices keep climbing like this?
Yup, that will be my family no longer affording our lives. We already dig into the savings every month
I can’t afford that.
Seriously, that’s more than my share of the mortgage. That’s more than I pay for my car.
What the fuck.
Great and I am living with WFH flatmates who request the flat be heated 24/7 through winter. I think I’ll go live in a tent instead.
Jw is everyone staying in one room with an electric heater and the doors closed cheaper?
People will be going into the woods to collect firewood if this carries on.
>The Kremlin-controlled gas firm Gazprom said earlier this week it would cut flows through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline to 20% of capacity, a threat it has delivered on. It blamed problems with turbines, which it said had been made worse by sanctions, imposed by the west because of the invasion of Ukraine.
This is Russia showing us that they have us by our (oily) ball sacks. We sanction Russia, they sanction back. Doesn’t matter what flowery words are used “technical issues blah blah”. Its a power play.
At this point, the only response is to cut it off and be done with it. This would mean relying on other suppliers (a massive increase in their demand that they probably can’t meet, meaning even more increases) and freeze to death as we built replacements for the shortfall.
Its a dismal reality we live in, basically the west is at war with Russia in everything but name.
they only made £948 million profit last year. how will they survive without an increase.
it’s fine guys, because our wages are increasing to help combat the rise of energy prices!
said no one ever.
Maybe we’ll have to have ‘energy mortgages’ where we only pay a quarter of the bill and the rest is kept as a debt to be paid off once the crisis is over
It’s getting to the point where we will need a nuclear winter just to keep warm. What a mess these past 2-3 years have been
At this point does it even matter? people can’t afford it now, we just won’t be able to pay it.
This works out to approx 19.5% of gross income annual if you earn National Minimum Wage, work full time and are over 23.
If you are younger or don’t/ can’t work full time, it’s an even higher percentage.
Just to keep the lights on, your water hot and the heating on. Unacceptable.
Genuinely don’t know how many people are going to afford this. What is gonna happen winter time when this really starts to bite is going to be interesting, especially if it is publicised that the big elec companies are still making shed loads of money
Let’s not forget the government writes the laws.+, they could do a lot more to force energy company profits down. If someone came into the country and forced us to choose between heating and eating the government would stop them. But as is its their mates its absolutely fine. Tories and their supporters are diabolical.
Meanwhile the potential future PM claims expenses to heat his swimming pool. What reality are we in and how do I leave.
I’m.still trying to work out why gas represents only 25% of the input costs and yet 100% of the KWH of electricity followed it’s price increase %. How come spikes in gas prices makes wind generation follow suit?
I mean eventually it’s just going to get to the point where people won’t be able to pay their energy bills whether they want to or not.
What are they realistically gonna do? You can’t force people to pay for bills with money that doesn’t exist in their bank accounts.
If only the government hadn’t got rid of all the gas storage facilities…
At the moment my family are kinda getting along . This next price hike is game over .
I don’t understand why the Tory overlords aren’t doing anything about this. Like nothing, literally fuck all. What the actual fuck do they think is going to happen
This is absolutely insane. Tax the excess profits and return them to the people. What the fuck do we have a government for, if not helping us through things like this?
Will have to freeze in the winter then. Will have everything turned off apart from the fridge, Internet & TV. Will be wrapped in clothes & my duvet. Stick to eating once a day. No hope left in this country its beyond a fuckin joke now, the wealthy want us all dead!!
So we import about 1/2 of 1%. Russia’s share of that is so small that writing it as a percentage would be hard to understand.
So the price has gone up, not because of lack of supply for the UK, but because we are in a bidding war, where energy companies that produce the gas, would rather sell to Europe to plug the shortage they have from Russia (which affects them more).
**EDIT
Point to also note, there is a gas pipeline going from the UK to mainland Europe. This pipeline is already exporting at max capacity. They can’t supply faster. Just imagine what the price would be if they could export more….
This is corporate greed, nothing more. Put our price up to reduce consumption, sell more to Europe.
Fully expect it to get even worse. Energy companies and energy exporting states will squeeze every last bit of money they can before the world decides to fuck it and go nuclear + renewable.
What’s a war or two between friends if it keeps the prices higher
This headline is going to be £5000 by the time the October change finally hits! It creeps up every time they report on it! 🙈
We variously delayed and cancelled 9 GW of baseload nuclear over the last decade. Today, the combined 24 GW of wind installed hit a nadir of NOUGHT POINT TWO FUCKING SEVEN GW. The grid must balance, it has no storage to speak of and most likely never will, so *someone* must supply the difference at almost any cost.
*what the fuck did you think was going to happen?* Genuinely? Is there a fucking energy fairy I’m not aware of?
Yet we don’t get our gas from Russia but our prices keep going up and countries like France where they get Russian gas has locked the price at something like a 5% increase. It isn’t the Russians increasing the energy prices it’s the shorty government doing nothing
People in authority have made insane decisions to rely on Russia for our energy. Their decisions are costing every person thousands of pounds. This is criminal negligence and they must be prosecuted.
Part of the issue is Brits just accept this. Myself included will just moan about it on Reddit. The French would have rioted months ago.

How long until the UK citizens finally storm Parliament? Got to happen sometime soon if things keep going as is.
I hope this will help in us having more nuclear power plants in the country, it’s cleaner for the environment and generates more energy as well
I’ve been skint since the start of covid. Lost my business. Barely hanging on with help from my parents. National insurance is more, food is more, petrol and diesel is more. If it keeps going I genuinely don’t know how we will be able to keep our house. I’m genuinely scared!
I’m already losing money each month despite working full time. This just can’t be done.
Just remember that to a large extent this cost of living crisis is a result of the actions taken by Russia. Never ever forgive those savages for this.
What a fucking decade this has been so far.
Lost my job in 2020 to redundancy. Lost most of my savings living without a proper income (thanks covid).
Now my household bills are tripling while I’m stuck as a minimum wage slave (going back to college though. To retrain as an accountant and hopefully get a better career in a few years time) and im already going 50/50 with my mother for house bills. I probably only have £400 to myself after bills a month and that’s slowly getting eaten away more and more every month with rising fuel and food costs :/
We can’t afford to live like this any more 🙁 already cut back as many expenses as I can. The government need to do more than line their own pockets for once.
Ban the export of gas.
The UK produces most of its gas, so stop the energy companies from selling it. Call it national security or whatever.
> Consumers also warned bills of more than £3,500 a year could last ‘well into’ 2024
The thing is, they won’t go back down. Once they know they can get away with it, they’ll stick with it. Same as petrol prices.
What are these useless fucks even here for.
I naively believed that the government would intervene *last autumn* when prices started to sky rocket (before the Russian invasion), and yet here we are with the January predictions worse than anyone thought possible 12 months ago, and the government are arguing about who gets to run the country on the basis of who hates trans people and unions more.
People are going to die because of this.
But then again, people were dying because of covid, and what did our dear leader say? “Let the bodies pile high”.
How we haven’t rioted, let alone sprung a general strike at this point, is a mystery.
Wait a minute … on official gvt website, gvt claims that we’re no way dependent on russian imports.

Just a point to note, to put this “Russia” problem into perspective. In 2020 we imported 12,000 metric tonnes of gas from Russia. To compare, we imported 1,440,000 from Norway. Source https://www.statista.com/statistics/381963/crude-oil-and-natural-gas-import-origin-countries-to-united-kingdom-uk/
The UK produced 39.5 billion cubic meters, which converts to 316,885,886 metric tonnes, so the UK predominantly produces it’s own gas, and has f all to do with Russia.
