  1. Maybe bring that over to r/Svalbard as Barentsburg isn’t even close to Norway.

Edit: those for you who might not know, Barentsburg to Nordkapp (so mainland Norway) is about 830 km, whilst Murmansk to Kirkenes is just 250 km.

  2. Context below.

    > Under the terms of the unique Svalbard Treaty of 1920, citizens of signatory countries have equal rights to exploit natural resources, and as a result Russia, along with Norway (via the Sveagruva mine and Mine 7), maintains mining operations on Svalbard. However, as Svalbard is under Norwegian sovereignty, the Russian government is represented in Barentsburg by a consulate. This is the northernmost diplomatic mission of any kind in the world.

  3. Over half of the population are in fact Ukrainian. It must be a weird atmosphere living side by side now being forced to accept eachother even when it’s so polarized meanings…as I read. It was written several articles about this in the newspaper. One of the Ukrainian students here worked there, told me as much as 80%were Ukrainian, but read now70% som pretty much correct.

  4. Cool, I’ve also been there!
Pretty surreal experience I have to say; going with the boat from Longyearbyen to Barentsburg felt like moving back into the eastern block at the time of the cold War. Big cement buildings that are all alike, sad vibes all around, an eery playground with rusty metal toys and the giant mural of miners next to the cosmonauts.
Really cool visit but am I glad I don’t live there.
