Mick Lynch takes apart Liz Truss over plans to effectively ban industrial action

  1. This is precisely what it is – all those comparisons to the 1970’s are laughable because this would have been *fundamentally unthinkable* then – identical to the fascist anti-protest bill.

You would’ve had a lot more than the miners strike & the poll tax riots had Thatcher tried this – but the current electorate seem more than happy to roll over.

The Tories are a regressive force in British politics, always have been. Their stated political aim is to essentially return to an aristocracy. This country needs rid of them permanently.

  2. Help a millennial out. How do you ban industrial action? Fire everyone? Ok, cool, we’ll see how that works out for you. Fine people for not going to work? That’s between the striker and their employer. Try to prosecute someone for ‘doing a strike?’ Just… weird.

  3. At this rate it feels like only a matter of time until we go full 1984 and the Tories, elected on a platform of getting Brexit done and cutting immigration, in the face of workers striking go out to the Commonwealth to ask for workers to come over and do the jobs that striking British workers are asking ‘too high’ a salary or job conditions to do.

  4. I’m sure that will help ensure she wins, what with the only people having a vote being conservatives who would mostly _like_ the idea of undermining workers rights.

  5. Truss should know exactly what happens when you force workers to attend work as they will then work to rule ie soldier on the job en masse.

For prior art, consider how badly Cabinet has performed its duties over the past decade and despite that has still received handsome pay increases.

  6. This seems like an insane idea. If you want to bring the unions out on strike as hard as they possibly can go, threaten to take away their right to strike. They have literally nothing to lose.

  7. Truss seems to think she’s Thatcher reincarnated – and it’s got worse as this leadership nonsense has progressed. Her attitude and manner of speaking have changed – it’s hilarious!

  8. Stupid question here so apologies in advance, if you join a strike action from your union, are you still paid your salary? Or is unpaid leave but you can’t be fired?

  9. Even when truss has openly admitted what she wants to do with unions and workers rights to strike….. She’s still far in the lead.

Honestly I hope this country gets rinsed by the tories because they absoloubtly deserve every penny

  10. The irony of the potential PM of the United Kingdom cracking down on unions & saying Scotland should stay in the Union

  11. I blame Tory Bliar who in 1997 should have immediately rolled back all the Draconian Thatch laws that robbed the working class of their union power. We need to get back to the point where unions can bring the government to its knees and force them to do the right thing. Without strong unions we are at the mercy of the capitalist thugs.

  12. This guy is fantastic. So articulate and has his finger on the pulse of the majority of people who just want to live a reasonable quiet life without being fucked at every turn.

On a side note. Does everyone take part in this election or who actually gets to vote?

  13. There’s a bad vibe, the country is in a mess and the Tories are fuelling the flames. They’re looking for more enemies

  14. What a great country to live in. Just another data point to throw in the collection that’s totally not relevant to the direction this country is going in. Ban industrial strike action, that doesn’t share anything negative with countries we previously assorted this type of action with as being concerning.

I know I’m speaking to the choir on here but I just don’t see this country dramatically changing course.

Unless they get rid of FPTV and bring in what the Irish have with single transferable vote then I don’t see an out. At a certain point when you look at the world you have to have confidence that in your opinion this is wrong.

In my opinion this country is going further right wing everyday, a race to remove human rights and it’s apparently met with cheers? Look at how the public reacted to the climate protestors after decades of inaction? It’s a lost cause in my opinion. If they didn’t make it harder to leave this union I would have left already. Luckily I live in Scotland and we have a glimmer of light at the end of this tunnel, something to cling onto and hope for a better future because the UK certainty isn’t showing any signs of glimmer of light. More like dumping untreated sewage into the water (they have been doing that by the way).

  15. Mick is doing a very good job at reframing the argument. The government, media, all like to push the narrative of “striking is inconvenient and frustrates” but Mick is very good at being heard on the point that companies are making crazy profits right now… why is everyone actually doing the work struggling?

  16. Discontented workers are discontented even if striking is illegal. You just increase the pressure so the point when they strike comes later, they’re more angry and now it’s illegal so there are fewer escalation steps and violence is more likely.

I get that the ruling classes are only in it for themselves but at some point surely you’d rather be rich in a country that is unlikely to storm your manor house and drag you out by the heels.

Surely the greatest threat to most billionaires wealth is societal collapse? Instead of building bunkers they should be building social programs.

  17. Mick Lynch has started to deconstruct the Tory narrative in a way more people can understand what is going on. He seems to be a solitary voice fighting the forces of the new feudalism. They had better listen to him, he is a reasonable man the alternative is much more dire.
