Clare Daly ‘salutes’ Sabina Higgins letter on war in Ukraine

  1. Why is this being downvoted? It’s a real story.

Michael D Higgins himself might be in trouble now. Expect him to repeat what he did after the Nigerian incident and make another attack on the government to distract.

  2. In a lot of these cases I understand what these people are trying to say but the way they say it is just unimaginably tone deaf and pretentious. There are absolutely ways to say “Actually war is bad and like many conflicts this one has plenty of precursors to it that various parties are responsible for” without also putting you fucking foot clear into your lungs.

  3. Message to Russia: Cease fire and take over Donetsk/Luhansk, wait for 4/5 years for everyone to forget and try again in Estonia/Latvia. Rinse and Repeat.

  4. Sorry how can Ukraine agree to a ceasefire when they have invaders in their country. You don’t want Clare Daly in charge if RoI was to ever be invaded, she’d just give them the keys to the country.

  5. Who would not?

“Let’s get between the countries at war and stop the slaughter.”

Who would not agree with Sabina?

Judging from the amount of irrational, stupid comments here, a large proportion of r/Ireland would not agree with Sabina.

  6. I’m just waiting for the clown Mick Wallace to stick his few words in there too. Jesus Christ Ireland is embarrassing these days!!!

  7. Guys, if you don’t understand the basics that supporting negotiations is not pro war, then you are too dumb to be allowed to vote. You should be revoked of any right to vote until to gain a few IQ points.

  8. The weird shit that these absolute morons never seem to get. There are peace negotiations – do they think the world was waiting for them to suggest it? They’ve been going months – the general topic is “stop doing a genocide” vs “we’re not doing a genocide, we just don’t want you to exist”

  9. Her letter wasn’t far from what’s suggested by Noam Chomsky or Henry Kissinger. Every serious minded person looking at the situation critically knows a negotiated settlement will be necessary.

It’s only the armchair generals who think that Ukraine could mount a counter offensive to take back all their territory and push Russia back into their own borders.

  10. For any of those people who were of the “i dont get whats so bad about the letter” side, the fact that clare daly has blessed it should tell you everything about how wrong it was

  11. I also think negotiations are needed. But they should be done on the basis that Europe will now start to help build and supply Ukraines air force, at an accelerating pace. The longer the Russians refuse to start an exist strategy, the bigger the airforce gets.

Europe must put an end to war in Europe.

  12. The issue with these very stupid takes, is that the Russian tactic of salami-isation is to do exactly this. Chop off parts of a neighbouring country, sue for peace hoping that the soft westerners will force your victim into signing peace so you can consolidate your gains. Absord (ethnically cleanse and deport hostile populations) what you have eaten. Repeat. This is what the Russian state has been doing for hundreds of years.

Russia and Putin should never be rewarded in the form of forcing Ukraine into massive territorial concessions for peace at any cost. That is what was tried 80 years ago (the Sudetenland for example) and it resulted in the most destructive war in human history as an expansionist power will never be satisfied.

I don’t understand why Claire and others on the left in particular feel such a need to advocate for a fascist regime engaged in systemic genocide in Ukraine. Anyone trying to ‘both sides’ a clear case of an aggressive imperialist war is a fucking idiot.

The best way to describe Claire, is that she’s an empty vessel really. Years ago, someone on this subreddit wrote to her asking her if she supported Ireland joining Euratom for research purposes and her response said it all about the intellectual calibre of this woman.

What is wrong with Sabina’s letter, is that it is completely ignorant of the nuance of this conflict. It is essentially a colonial war where one party is seeking to destroy the sovereignty, language and heritage of a neighbour. It is unconceivable to force or push the Ukrainians into a peace when the Russians are ethnically cleansing the occupied territories.
