Travel chaos as thousands of rail workers strike over jobs, pay and conditions

  1. Good.

The rail companies are making hundreds of millions a year, they should be ploughing that money back into their staff and infrastructure, not spaffing it away on already rich shareholders.

  2. Solidarity.

I hope they get their conditions + pay rise. It feels a bit more intense than usual because the minute the government caves it’s going to have to be for everyone – NHS, Royal Mail, etc.

  3. Ignoring the pay rise the main issue is changed to terms and conditions and the plan to cut maintenance tasks by 50% which is insane and won’t “modernise” the railway it will put it back as maintenance is preventative. Meaning if we find something close to failure we fix it at the time rather than waiting for it to fail.

Also the joblosses are solely to save money. Instead of looking at outside expenditure like suppliers and contractors.

  4. Went past Euston 5 mins ago and saw Mick talking to the media. Should be interesting to hear what smear campaign Murdochs Minions have in store for him this time, but at usual, Big Mick Energy does what he does best.

I Seriously want Mick to win this battle and for his colleagues (no matter what department) to receive their correct payments and better working conditions.

  5. Just a reminder that this was all very much avoidable. Grant schapps and the dft have known about this for over 7 months, they’ve refused negotiations since march (regardless of what they say to the press).

Staff are looking at mass forced redundancies, real cuts to their current wages (between 10%-20% of current take home). Unpaid extension of their working weeks by between 4 and 6 hours and a whole plethora of other negative changes.

The press will present this as solely as railway workers wanting a pay rise, this is not the case.

  6. I hope everyone remembers to put the blame where it belongs – the Government and the train companies.

If anyone is inconvenienced or delayed by these strikes, just remember that the rail bosses and the Tories *chose* for you to be inconvenienced so that they could try to force the workers to accept a huge pay cut.

  7. I’m travelling tomorrow. Last week I got a notification to say my train was cancelled so I cancelled my train. 2 days later the train was back on. So I booked up again. 1 day later it said it was cancelled again so I cancelled again. Then the next day it said it was back on. So I booked again. Talk about fucking chaos.

  8. Good, I’m hoping this will give other sectors the confidence to stand up for themselves and strike as well.
They need to get them in before the tories try to ban strikes full stop.

It really messes up with my head that I can soon be living in a country that will have banned protests and strikes. Mental

  9. I fully support this… but also I’m travelling tomorrow and Friday. Maybe I will look into intercity buses.

  10. Good shit guys! Bending over and taking might be the British way now…sorry, I mean “stiff upper lip”… but glad to see the fight against it

  11. Reminder that this is the workers protesting cuts to maintenance budget. The kind of thing that leads to train crashes and bridge collapses in the headlines if funding is cut.

  12. It’s easy for me to support them when I don’t use trains, but I hope they get what they deserve and quickly so the public aren’t inconvenienced for longer than necessary.

Strike action is coming in abundance soon, I hope the public remember they should be aiming their anger upwards.

  13. Good, I think I echo everyone when we say we support them fully.

They’re bringing a lot of attention to the average man’s plight during this ‘cost of living crisis’ whilst companies are making millions in profit, we’re left with scraps.

  14. Can any economists tell me why it shouldn’t be law that every person gets a pay rise of at least RPI every year?

  15. Mick Lynch posted a video update to the RMT website yesterday. The train companies and the government aren’t budging. They’re still wanting to force through all the cuts to jobs and have made no offers regarding pay.

Make no mistake here, the government want to slash the railways beyond bare minimum and safety will suffer.

  16. Any normal worker who disagrees with strikes is either brainwashed or not for themselves.

The Tory leader debate the other day, both Sunak and Truss said yes to banning strikes without hesitation. How can that be allowed and normal people agree with it? They’re stripping away our rights and I haven’t seen enough about how atrocious that will be.

  17. I need to get an earlier train to work because of this… but that doesnt bother me because everyone has a right to strike for better pay

  18. Brill.

Stop voting these fucking clowns into government, everything is going to shit cause of these puppets that only serve their corporate masters.

  19. Just a thought, something similar happened in Japan with bus drivers, they went on strike for better etc, but they still kept the services running all while taking no fares, so the company was still making the same huge losses, while still not impacting travellers, while I personally feel that issue is at the bottom of the pile and the majority of the public seem to be with those striking, it might work more in the favour of the strikes of they did it the same way the Japanese bus drivers did theirs.
