Why would anyone ever order 6 chicken wings for 5,5€ if they can get 2×3 for 4€?
Is McDonald’s conscious this makes no sense at all?

  1. If you look another week, you will see that prices are consistent in the range.

The first option is for “small” (complementary) needs while the second option only exists to make the 3rd option attractive. This is “willingness to pay” maximization (I don’t recall the exact marketing name for that).

However you come on a week where the three chicken wings is a “MCMoment deal” hence price is reduced.

Price is reduced because MCMoment exists to make you top up an existing order. Not because you wanted to buy wings as a main target. At the McDonald’s physical place these offers are presented on different screens.

  2. Reverse psychology to make you buy 6 or 9 wings thinking you’re the smart one when in reality you’d be satisfied with less? No idea if that’s the case, but big companies like McDonalds do act on psychologic studies like this at times.

  3. For the longest time BK here had nuggets on the dollar menu that worked out considerably cheaper than the regular nugget menu items. As long as you didn’t mind ordering in increments of 4 nuggets, it was always the cheaper option.

Never did figure that one out but then one day the $1 four piece was just gone. I figure someone at HQ finally did the math… So… Enjoy it while you can?

  4. Could be that the price is set by deep learning algorithm? These occasionally produce weird results (that are nonetheless correct)

  5. In case there is a promotion this makes sense.

But they trick “smart” people into buying 3 times the portion of 3. So you still pay 6 euro for something probably cost them 2 euro in total.

You think you cheat the system but they made 4 euro profit.

  6. Either you’re the smartest Mc Donald’s customer or people leave their brain at the door when entering their restaurant.

But I’ve never considered this. But I never order chicken wings, though.

  7. The 3 wings are not in a box looking at the photo, so you need to carry them in your bare hands. You pay extra for the box on the 6 and 9 wings option, simple as that. How you’re going to carry 9 wings by hand if you order 3 times the 3 wings?

  8. People like figuring out ways to make a deal. You see this and think: “wow i’m gonna get 3×3 wings for less money than 9 wings and i’m really smart for doing so. Dumbass mcdo”. But they win cuz now you buy three portions.

  9. The thing is to fool people the same way Starbucks does with the cup sizes. For example, small is 4 euro, medium is 7 and big is 9. People would normally think, hell, med is 7 and big is 9, it’s not much so I can buy straight the big one. It’s the same for this because most people don’t pay attention right to the price to amount ratio and just buy the big one straight. Hope I make sense, sorry if I don’t

  10. So, because people like correcting another. (And 3 chicken wings are not enough) ppl will buy 3x 3 chicken wings -> €6 , then they realise that for only €0.60 they could get 3 more. In conclusion: they make u buy the most expensive choice

  11. I love how people seem to think they’re outsmarting McDonald’s by buying 2×3 instead of 1×6 because it’s cheaper. As if it was a mistake on their part.

But sure, I also like checking the deal-menu because sometimes I walk away having paid a few euros less than I initially planned to.
