Dental checkups to become less frequent in England and Wales

  1. Some people do need a check every six months -for instance gum disease. Come back in 2 yearsand they may be swinging in the breeze.

    It’s guidance only.

And the numbers – for an exam you get 1 point’s worth of work. Someone with a lot of work needed may need 12 points worth – so for every 12 patients delayed for two years you can see 1 new patient with high needs.

  2. I’ve completely given up on domestic dentists and tie in visits with holidays to Europe. My dentist at home said they’ve removed me from the system because I haven’t had an appointment in some time… which is because I couldn’t get an appointment in some time. When I had an emergency, they offered me an emergency out of pocket appointment… in 3 months.

It’s often cheaper and faster to fly to Poland, I just had an appointment to fix 2 teeth on a days notice cost me £110, the situation is fucked to say the least.

  3. I was told my usual 6 month check-up had to be delayed (when covid first hit) for a little while. Well, it’s been over 2 and a half years and I still can’t get in to see my local NHS dentist for a check-up.

Unless I have a dental emergency, I doubt I’ll be able to get an appointment with my dentist for the foreseeable future.

  4. I’m not sure we have NHS dentists anymore. I had to change NHS dentist because I’d moved out and couldn’t afford to travel half way across the county to get to them. Were there any NHS dentists near me accepting patients? Nope! Had to go private. £18 a month for 6 monthly check-ups, worldwide insurance and hygienist appointments.

  5. Makes complete sense. I hadn’t been in like 3years and decided to go for a general checkup. Teeth absolutely fine, no issues, £50.. Great, so you’ve just shown me that you want me to spend £50 every 6mo to get them cleaned?

  6. Will they allocate quotas on how much people can use the NHS next?
2nd heart attack? Sorry you have reached your quota no help for you.

  7. My dentist cancelled my scheduled check up this month and wouldn’t reschedule as they’re only allowing emergency appointments for the foreseeable future. No dentists taking on NHS patients in my area so just have to wait

  8. My kid was meant to be at the dentist yesterday. Dentist was off sick fair enough. Rebooked first available appointment ? 24th February. Tried book myself in for a check up some time in march. Awesome.

  9. NHS dentistry is collapsing and private surgeries have waiting lists that are insanely long. Teeth are apparently a luxury bone and just a regular check-up is out of reach of many, meaning problems will only get missed and that fixing the damage will be even more expensive. Soon, the meme about us having awful teeth will become reality.

  10. Me and my wife just go to Poland. Even in a complete shithole in Poland I can get an appointment at a good dentist usually within 3 to 4 days. Just last week inspection, descaling and one filling cost me around £90. Meanwhile, in all of Cumbria NOBODY could even give me a date for a check up, they’ve even refused to register my toddler son. UK is seriously fucked up.

  11. I have a crack in one of my molars that could really do with being repaired. It isn’t an issue right now, because it’s small, but I know it is just gonna get worse and worse, until the tooth can’t be saved. Basically just waiting for it to develop an infection so I can get it pulled out.

  12. Eh. Gave up on my dentist.

Cheeky basterds tell me NOT to come to my September checkup in 2020. Then have the nerve to kick me off the register because I “didn’t come to any appointments for 12 months” (because the country shut down and they told me not to come when it DID reopen). And want me to pay £120 just to be re-added to the register before I can pay for a checkup, and THEN pay for whatever work they claim needs doing :/

Fuck em. When I get dental pain I’ll just deal with an emergency dentist or go abroad. That’s a ball ache all on its own but it’s better than the fucking greed of my local practice.

  13. Dentists are a joke; they all drive very expensive cars, have frequent and long holidays and have plenty of money to spare. It’s absolutely disgusting how much money they charge for basic essential dental work, it should be illegal.

Physicians, surgeons and nurses should be paid more with the extra money we waste on dentists.
