Apparently, being Cypriot nationals also makes us [Commonwealth Citizens](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commonwealth_citizen), which from what I gather is like a worse EU Citizenship that doesn’t even guarantee anything in most other member states; it doesn’t even appear on our passports, unlike the “European Union” text written in 3 whole languages.

It seems it’s most useful for those wishing to go to the UK, and pretty much nowhere else.

So, has anybody here actually benefited from this citizenship, or has it become nothing more than a fun fact to point out?

  1. I have voted in UK elections because commonwealth citizens have this right

Edit: EU citizens can only vote in local elections. Commonwealth can vote in general elections and potentially referenda as well (Cypriots and Maltese could vote on Brexit referendum due to being member states of both, but Canadians could not)

  2. I had the chance to vote during Brexit. Didn’t do much good my vote as it turned out, but still I liked I had the chance to have a say.

  3. The main advantage of being a commonwealth citizen is that you can use consular services overseas of other nations. In other words if you are a Cypriot citizen in a country without a Cypriot embassy you can use the British High Commission (which are located in practically every country) for assistance.

This is actually a pretty big perk.

  5. Actually I’m Irish so to you boyo you got that one wrong. If you dwell on Imperialism move to Russia or China then you will find real freedom with your Imperialism

  6. I see your from Nicosia! where were you when it comes to WW2 and bankrupting your great country in the EU besides sponging off others and passing around brown envelopes watching your country go broke and no help for the poor,

  7. Your opinion only it ain’t doing a lot on the world stage the100yrs. Been on holidays in Cyprus and after a couple of tours thar was it!. History there is not a lot either so don’t pretend that Cyprus is so superior than the the British Isles it ain’t.
