So he decided to go and work for, the largest child abuse network in the UK…. yeah! that makes sense.
As someone who attended a minor private school in the 70s I am not in the least bit surprised and what he says resonated with me totally. I don’t think the experience at my school was as bad as that described in the article but it wasn’t good. Casual violence against children by teachers at those sort of schools was pretty much expected and most of us kept our heads down and tried to deal with it as best we could. In those days children were very rarely listened to so even if you did muster up the courage to tell someone you likely were not believed and there was every possibility that it would make the situation worse. Even parents would refuse to believe what went on and often were were told that we must have deserved it or that we should work harder. It was extremely stressful and a few cracked under the pressure as there was really no way out.
The times that some people, including in this sub, see as the good old days of schooling that should be brought back
That’s not just a private school problem, I don’t know how bad it is nowadays but I experienced so horrific abuse in the public school system in the 90s and 00s.
I was once locked in a closet for a whole day without food or water to hide me away from the ofcom inspectors inspecting that day.
I attended a boarding school as a day student (not sleeping over).
Heard lots of stories of sexual abuse, quite a lot of boys abusing boys which I can’t know if they are true or not, but very glad I didn’t have to board. Definitely has bully teachers though, not sure if they also did sexual abuse.
I’m a peaceful guy on the whole, but even I’d love to go back and batter particular teachers, if they’re still alive.
Late 70s, corporal punishment was the norm, started petering out around the mid 80s.
I was assaulted by my headmaster around 85 ish, he got deservedly pissed off with me and threw me backwards over a desk, my last year in that school he pussy footed around me as he knew if I ever reported it it would be a sackable offense, I never did as I grew up with being attacked by me teachers and my parents. Previously my and my classmates would get caned, strapped with a belt , or slapped with ruler on hands or slapped on the side of the head with impunity by the teachers.
In the 70s in my primary school if you cried in class you would be forced to wear a pink safety pin with pink ribbon attached for a week to shame you.
It gave our generation backbone, but it was abuse.
It’s rampant in private schools, especially boarding schools.
He should tell the police or a social worker or something.
I think it’d be faster to find people who weren’t abused in schools in the 70s, my aunts music teacher was caught with multiple girls and they just made him move schools, the shame was all put on the victims
Tim Westwood strikes again
I haven’t even thrown a punch in 10 years. But there’s some assholes from my school days that I’d love to swing a fist at if we ever crossed paths again.
